Review: One Last Shoe (An Alex Drew Novel) by David Weiskirc
The writer did a great job by introducing the readers to the crime event instead of going straight to the day after the event. It gives the readers the idea of what actually happened. To me, it helps to imagine whatever Alex Drew has to explain throughout the book.
This book consists of a lot of useful knowledge. It makes you think and learn new words that we can barely encounter on our own. Considering that it use New Mexico as its setting, it actually helps the readers to understand more of the culture there. Basically, if you read this book, you will not just enjoy the story, but, also learn few new things.
The ending is perfect to me. It ends with a resolution and detailed explanations of what happened to the characters afterwards. Readers usually have an attachment towards the characters, thus, it is important to let us know whatever happen to the characters after everything ends. Weiskircher did a good job in telling the readers what they want to know.
I don't know about any other book, I'm pretty convinced that not so many crime books out there has beautiful or relatable quotes. Usually, mystery or thriller books, they barely can be related to our life, however, again, Weiskircher did a great job in trying to make the hero is comparable to our normal self. Alex Drew (the hero) despite of what he capable of doing is just another human being who lost his wife and trying to start a new life with a lot of animals involved. Rare animals, I would say.
The writing is understandable, but it is a bit heavy to be read by people who are not English native speaker. It is not too difficult for me, yet not too easy as well. The book doesn't actually put everything in the writing. It leaves you with a lot of space to imagine the setting where the scenes take place. It is in a good pace, it does not draggy and I wish it's less compacted because to be honest, there are so many to be taken in and if Weiskircher use more pages and take a bit more time to slow down the pace a bit, it will be great! Yet, to all crime and mystery fans out there, this book must be so likeable considering it doesn't waste much time at all trying to explain simple things.
Although it is not that easy to read, I believe I actually enjoyed all the humorous scenes very much. I love all the characters being so sassy, cool and very relaxed. Not so many writers can put a funny man in the middle of an intense event, but yes, Weiskircher did it very well and it never fails to crack me up. The characters are very well-developed and as a reader, you can see all of the changes yourself throughout the book. From an average guy to some smart investigator. The changes are done rapidly yet, it still makes so much sense.
I know I'm giving this book quite a low rating, but that is not because it is not enjoyable or I hate it. I liked it! But, the fact that I think the book have a lot of potential makes me think the first book should not be rated as a 5 star book yet. It is so enjoyable, so much potential to it, I believe that after the first book, the series is going to gain more stars!
