<r>It is the late nineties. Kenneth Swain is at the top of his world. Married to the woman he loves, he is a wealthy lawyer and a successful politician. All of a sudden, he runs out of luck. Almost overnight, he loses everything. When Kenneth comes across the files of an old client, Brookfield Shipping, he gets a new direction in life. He sets out on a treasure hunt. Fate leads Karen West and Roland Pogue to join him. While greed clearly motivates Kenneth and Roland, there is something else entirely that drives Karen to go on this dangerous adventure. <br/>
<br/>
What prompts Karen to risk her life and return to the scene where her life changed forever? Will she be able to attain her goal? What about Kenneth and Roland? Will they get their hands on the coveted treasure? Or, will they all unleash something completely unexplainable and dangerously sinister? <br/>
<br/>
<I><s></s>Dark Misfortunes<e></e></I> by Madison Heather McGuire is one of the most spine-chilling books I have ever read. While reading the book, I literally had goosebumps. McGuire is a brilliant author. She masterfully builds a world and transports us to it. Through her vivid words, she paints ethereal yet spooky pictures of the ocean, forest, and sky. McGuire meticulously charts the steps of a treasure hunt. The way she presents us with the details of a salvage operation, especially the diving aspect, is admirable. Also, I love how she enlivens the high society of Baltimore, the hustle-bustle of Florida, and the close-knit community of Key West. She also brings to us the rituals and customs of a small Haitian village. <br/>
<br/>
<I><s></s>Dark Misfortunes<e></e></I> has an incredible cast of characters. Karen is a beautiful yet troubled young lady. She clings to her past. It is incredible to see her grow and learn to embrace the present. Scott Christian is an upstanding young man. He is loyal and stands by his word, irrespective of anything. I love how he is always in Karen's corner. Kenneth is a well-developed character. In the beginning, he is a just man who is running after money. Yet, there is an innate kindness in him that cannot be denied. His transformation by the end of the book makes him my favorite. Roland, Captain Larry Lange, Al Mackie, and Bernie Morton all personify greed. They are willing to do just about anything to get rich. Through them, we learn the dangers of greed. Van Brookfield is one of the most unfortunate characters ever. Though his stint in the asylum and the ship scared me, I could not help but pity him. <br/>
<br/>
Warner Hagan and his minion truly made me tremble. The way McGuire draws them is admirable. Though, I would have loved it if we got a little more backstory about them. <br/>
<br/>
I rate <I><s></s>Dark Misfortunes<e></e></I> <B><s></s>4 out of 5 stars<e></e></B>. I have taken away a star as I found more than ten errors. Apart from the errors, I did not dislike anything about the book. <br/>
<br/>
Overall, <I><s></s>Dark Misfortunes<e></e></I> by Madison Heather McGuire is an incredible novel. I highly recommend it to fans of adventure novels, horror stories, and nautical tales. People who love reading about treasure hunts should enjoy the book as well. <br/>

Everyone has their own motivating factors for everything that they do. Whether you and see them clearly is irrelevant. I would, however, be interested in finding out those of Karen.

Seems like greed is the motivating factor for most of the characters in this book. But Karen has a different one from them? I would like to know. But I would like to know if those greedy fellows got their treasure. And was Karen able to fullfill her goal?. I enjoyed your review.

A horror story and a treasure hunt? Well, that's an interesting combination for what seems like an engaging novel. Thank you for your great review!
