Tecia McLaughlin's Beseeched delivers a suspenseful tale of murder and mystery that kept me interested from beginning to end. The book opens with its protagonist, Sela, getting mugged on the streets of Charleston, South Carolina. Her purse is stolen, and her locket is ripped from her neck. The mugger gets away easily, and Sela is left feeling shaken and questioning why she moved to South Carolina in the first place. Sela is the daughter of a billionaire who recently died while on a business trip. Her mother is also deceased. And her sister is not answering her phone.

When Sela’s sister is found dead in her apartment with a note on the table next to her body, the police rule it a suicide and close the case. Sela is convinced her sister wouldn’t have killed herself, and her sister’s friend Jake agrees. They agree to investigate the death themselves, calling in a private investigator to help. Sela’s fiance, Matt, reacts strangely to Sela’s insistence that her sister wouldn’t have killed herself. He is also not pleased to meet Jake; he can sense that Jake and Sela have chemistry. It is immediately apparent Sela has to be careful about who she trusts, as her life may also be at risk.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author weaves a web of suspense that lets readers know that Sela’s life is in immediate danger. The story is fast-paced, and it offers a good number of unexpected twists and turns. Sela’s kindness makes her seem like a perfect victim. She sees the good in everyone and innocently wants to believe that people are who they say they are. She is fortunate to have a few trusted family friends who stand by her side as she faces scary truths and realizes she isn’t safe in her home.

The book was excellent, but it left a few loose ends dangling towards the end. I can’t say much more without spoiling the book; however, the author left a few holes in the plot that could have been resolved. I also felt as if the romantic subplot between Sela and Jake felt superficial and suspiciously happy. The chemistry between the two characters felt a bit contrived. As a result, it was difficult to fully invest in their relationship and empathize with their emotions.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was fun to read and had elements that would make it appealing to many readers. I took one star away because a few aspects of the plot didn’t quite make sense or were left unresolved. But would I recommend this book to others to read? Absolutely. This was a gripping novel that successfully delivered on its premise. I would recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers; readers will find themselves thoroughly entertained by this book. I would also recommend this book to people looking for a beach read; this book is a page-turner that will have you yelling out loud at the protagonist as the truth is uncovered.

I think that I would like this book. It is very hard to go agains the authorities in some cases so I admire Sela very much.

I am thinking, what if Matt killed Sela's sister? Could it be the shocking twist in the book? This book sounds unputdownable as Sela's background being a billionaire's daughter can be a nice target to bad guys. I enjoyed your review, Emily. It's exciting to read.
