Review of E M P Honeymoon
This book establishes an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack with the undertone of a dystopian world where secret organizations, government bodies, and man of the society is slowly breaking into their new reality. The book opens with Kelly finally realizing that the dream honeymoon she planned for, downright to the last detail, has turned into a nightmare with shocking revelations. The opening is so well written that the chemistry between Tom, Kelly (husband and wife), and Mike (Kelly's brother in a government agency) is established immediately. Also, this section has been utilized both to develop interesting characters and the secrets cooking up in the EMP scene simultaneously. You are invested in the life of these characters. Across the globe, in a military training camp, some soldiers are being prepared. Throughout their training and mission, the reader will be equally invested in their choices and their fake lives starting.
Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., important decisions are being made. Chapter 4 onwards, all these carefully established worlds collide. One of the notable strengths of this book is Mercer's ability to distill complex scientific concepts into easily understandable terms. What makes the book a good and exciting read is the plethora of characters from different backgrounds involved in causing and protecting from the EMP attack. She takes readers on a journey through the fundamentals of electromagnetic pulses, explaining the science behind them, their sources, and their effects on various systems. Whether you are a seasoned professional or someone with limited technical knowledge, the author's clear explanations make this book accessible to many. The pacing of EMP Honeymoon is well-executed, with a perfect balance between action-packed sequences and quieter moments of reflection. Mercer keeps the narrative engaging by introducing various obstacles, encounters with other survivors, and ethical dilemmas that force the characters to make difficult choices. This blend of suspense, survival instincts, and ethical considerations adds complexity to the story, elevating it beyond a typical apocalyptic tale. The dialogue is engaging, and the narrative is pacy. The book takes you through many locations, from honeymoon destinations to military training camps.
The author has depicted an apocalyptic world in so much detail that you would reach for a breath. The editing is flawless, and the reader encounters no significant errors throughout the book. Some points for improvement are mentioned hereafter. The cover of the book needs some editing. The author's name is so placed that it gets mixed with the background color and doesn't stand out. To uncover compelling and unpredictable characters, characters need to be developed and given many arcs in the narrative. But in this book, many characters are suddenly placed and explained much later. This does add an element of thrill but, at the same time, may confuse or disinterest some readers. Overall this is an adventurous tale of mankind and an exciting read. I rate this book 5 out of 5.
