Review of Graham's Folly
Graham’s Folly by Miguel Gutierrez tells the story of Elliot Graham, a man who lives a charmed life. He has a successful career, more money than he can spend, and attentive staff that anticipate and see to his every need. All of that is thrown into jeopardy though, when he makes the mistake of trusting the wrong person. His error in judgment could cost him everything he has worked so hard to build and takes great pride in. It could also teach him that there is more to life than being a successful businessman and that he is not the only person who has made mistakes. As Elliot works to find a way out of the mess he created, he begins to see the world and those around him in a new light.
One of the things I enjoyed most about this book was watching the characters develop throughout the story. Even a few of the minor characters showed some growth. There were several instances throughout the book where characters were taken out of their element and put in situations that they weren’t entirely comfortable with. It was interesting to see how they reacted in these situations, and I enjoyed seeing different parts of their personalities.
There were a few things about this book that I didn’t care for. One thing I found particularly frustrating was that the main plot of the story dropped off midway through the book. The storyline was eventually picked back up and resolved later in the book, but there were several chapters where the problems Elliot was facing seemed completely forgotten. This book was also not professionally edited. There were a significant number of errors throughout the book. Finally, the character's thoughts appeared the same as spoken dialogue. I wish the author had used italics or some other way of differentiating the two. This may seem minor, but I found it disrupted the flow of the story when I would find out after the fact that something hadn’t been spoken out loud.
I would give this book a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. The plot was interesting, but I disliked the way the story changed focus in the middle of the book. I initially found the characters rather flat and difficult to relate to, but I was pleased to see them grow throughout the story. By the end of the book, they felt more real. I deducted one star for the inconsistency in the plot and one for the style and editing issues.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy character-focused books. Part of the plot of this story involves trading and the stock market. However, readers don’t need to be knowledgeable about these topics to enjoy the book.
