The Okanagan Fire Storm by J.D. Redhawk

The beginning of The Okanagan Firestorm starts with a Marine named Randall who tries to do the right thing and ends up meeting some bad people. Enter Jake Harper, a retired Marine living in Washington state with his dogs and his longtime girlfriend Toni. He is a self-described “Grumpy old man” and seems to always find his way into international incidents. In The Okanagan Fire Storm, Jake is enjoying his solitude and country life. His enjoyment is soon interrupted by the appearance of a German Shepherd puppy.

This puppy leads Jake to a cabin deep in the woods and to the puppy’s murdered owner, which happens to be Randall. This is the beginning of the story. After a series of events and strange coincidences, Jake takes it upon himself to solve the murder. This inevitably leads to bigger and badder things. It also leads to Jake keeping the puppy which he names Heidi. I had to include this part because it lets you know pretty quickly about the type of person Jake Harper is.

While trying to solve this murder, he finds himself enlisted to help find a missing child he had previously befriended on his travels across the country. Halfway through the story Jake finds himself in over his head. Sorting out this mystery and cleaning up the bodies afterwards is going to be a nightmare, especially because the reclusive Jake has to ask for help. As you read on you’ll realize he likes to work alone.

I really enjoyed this book. Mr. Redhawk has masterfully created a modern day action hero in the form of a grouchy and reclusive Marine. I love it when an author is so talented that he makes you forget that you’re reading a book. I felt like I was in Jake’s world. The story is a bit slow to start, but with most mystery/thrillers you need that kind of build-up. I didn’t mind it because it gave me time to get to know the characters on a better level. You could tell this was a labor of love for the author, which made me like the book even more. I gladly and wholeheartedly give The Okanagan Firestorm a 4 out of 4 stars. The editing was clean with only small infractions, not enough to merit a deduction in rating. The story is well written and very detailed. The author is very descriptive of almost every detail which can be a problem for some, but I enjoyed it.

This book is the follow up to the Cambodian Connection by J.D. Redhawk. It is also the second book featuring Jake Harper as the main character. Even though this is the second book, it can be read on its own. I recommend this book for anyone who likes action/adventure, contemporary spy thrillers, or conspiracy theories. I also recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery and good writing.

literaturelover, Thank you so much for your kind words and review. I am very happy that you enjoyed the story. It's a pleasure when someone can get past my "shoot first and ask questions later" style and enjoy the plot/story. If you make the shepherds famous and I have to stop writing to address their publicity - I'll be calling you. Chuckle

@literaturelover your passion for the story is contagious, and I'll add it to my list for that reason alone. Congrats to the author on such a glowing review!

Sounds like a very interesting and pleasurable read. I like it when author deviates from the typical kind and gentle protagonists to grumpy and unlikely-hero types. Congratulations to J. D. Redhawk for such a wonderful book!
