[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "THE F.A.R.M" by Nancy J. Coulter.]
The F.A.R.M. by Nancy J. Coulter is a Christian thriller. It is a relatively short, fast-paced, suspenseful story. The book contains some quotations from Bible scripture, and many of the characters have a strong Christian Faith, but I believe non-Christians would enjoy this book also.
Mary is a 17-year-old girl from Bend, Indiana, a small safe town. As she is leaving her job in the local shopping mall, she feels a shocking pain between her shoulders and hits the ground. Mary wakes later in a locked room with bars on the windows. Doctor Bart and his nurses enter her room and tell her that a gas explosion obliterated her home town and that she managed to survive and is recuperating in the hospital. Strangely, Mary notices the change in climate through the bars in the window and feels like the room is a prison. Nurse Donna and Nurse Karen attend to her. Donna has cold, dark eyes, but Mary feels a possible kinship with Karen. They take trips to the shady trees, providing the perfect location for Mary and Karen to talk, and what Mary discovers is crucial to her survival.
This book provides a thrilling story that builds momentum from the first page. It is easy to read and hard to put down. The author creates suspense and immerses you in terrifying situations with the characters. Parts of the plot are dark and are suited to a horror genre with shocking and gruesome descriptions. The author’s imagination creates unexpected twists. I thought it was interesting that there was a Christian aspect to this style of book, with all the characters depending on their faith to help them survive.
I enjoyed the characters and the camaraderie that develops between them. Interesting backstories help bring the characters to life, which is another reason I found the book hard to put down.
My only constructive criticism about this book is that it could have been longer. The story is fabulous and has the potential for expansion. I felt some parts were rushed and deserved more time on the page. In particular, the ending seemed brief. The author could have created more thrills and adventure in the conclusion to keep the momentum going.
I found a couple of spelling and grammar mistakes, but they did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. I believe the book has been professionally edited. I enjoyed the story and loved the dark elements and the interesting characters. I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. The star deduction is for the slightly rushed and disappointing ending.
