Review of Wack City
Wack City by Miko Montgomery is a thrilling work of fiction, that delves into the horror genre. This captivating novel follows the journey of Jill Levy, a Hollywood producer, and Reuben, a talented writer who also happens to be a limousine driver. Their paths briefly cross in Las Vegas, where Jill seeks solace from her frustrations. The book explores captivating themes such as mystery, suspense, ambition, and terror.
The narrative unfolds within the confines of a limousine ride, serving as both the beginning and end of the story. It is during this ride that Jill, feeling robbed of the recognition she deserves in the film industry, finds a unique opportunity to unburden herself. Desperate to advance her career, she discovers a stroke of luck in the form of Reuben, the writer-cum-limousine driver, whom she aptly describes as "a story brat." Jill concocts a plan to exploit his work, which encompasses chilling elements such as monsters, a deranged old lady, ghosts, and even inanimate objects springing to life.
I appreciated the author's meticulous development of each character, providing intricate details that extended even to the characters within Reuben's stories. This level of attention allowed my imagination to roam freely. The author skillfully took the readers on an exhilarating journey through a narrative filled with numerous unexpected twists and turns. It vividly showcased the extraordinary nature of the city, where dreams and nightmares materialize, and everyone who ventures to Las Vegas attains their desired experiences, albeit at the cost of their lives, much like the trio who sought the ultimate sexual encounter.
I found no faults with this book as it consistently kept me on the edge of my seat. I was constantly unsure of when or where a jump scare would be utilized, transforming an innocent tale of a son caring for his elderly mother into a horrifying narrative featuring a murderous old lady seeking vengeance upon her own family. The stories were undeniably thrilling and captivating. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to readers who relish mysteries, adventures, and the chilling elements of horror.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its enthralling beginning and stunning, yet satisfying, ending. It was a pleasant surprise to witness Reuben thwart Jill's attempts to steal his work. Furthermore, the book demonstrated exceptional editing, as it was flawlessly executed without any errors.
