No Reprieve by Inge-Lise Goss is a dystopian thriller and the second book in the No Freedom series. It takes place in the United States, especially in Portland, where The Institute monitors citizens and rebels. It follows Paislee, a secret rebel, and her mission to identify potential androids and loyalty-chipped humans in a courthouse under an alias. While missing Tate, her rebel boyfriend, Paislee has to dodge Pellegrin Murr, one of the most important members of The Institute, and her ex. Paislee deals with her feelings for the rebellion and her mission as she attempts to reach out to Kara, her childhood best friend, without being detected.

Discovering corruption, murders, and hidden identities, Paislee has to stay undercover, no matter the cost. With betrayal on every side, who will come out on top? Even though this is the second book in the series, Goss provides enough information without sounding too exposition-heavy for it to stand alone.

The world-building is very well-done, and even better for a sequel. It never felt like clumsy exposition, more like the reestablishment of an already established world. Goss clearly defines Paislee and Tate’s relationship in the first chapter, and it wastes no time getting to the action. While the prologue was a bit on the slow side, it instantly picked up the pace. No Reprieve is an accurate title since it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Even with no prior knowledge of these characters, I was invested in their story.

While dystopia has never been one of my favorite things to read about, the dynamic characters, interesting plot, and twists and turns held my attention throughout the book. Despite thinking the prologue was slow, Goss does a great job writing characters that a reader can root for and plotlines that keep a reader’s attention. Even though a love triangle could be stereotypical, Paislee’s perspective on her mission and her emotional turmoil make it more interesting.

I found a few mistakes here and there, but the book was very well-edited. These tiny mistakes did not detract from my comprehension, and I have decided this book deserves five out of five stars. It was clearly professionally edited, and I look forward to seeing more from this series. I found this book engaging and entertaining. I recommend this book to people who enjoy dystopia, androids, female protagonists, and world-building. They should also be comfortable with many mentions of sex.
