Review of Hattie Vavaseur
Hattie Vavaseur, by Rebecca Wildsmith, was a delightfully fun and always surprising read. Utterly unique and beautifully written, I tore through the story, laughing and constantly excited to experience the next unexpected twist.
After being picked up from a funeral, Hattie Vavaseur realizes that she’s not headed home as she’d expected. Instead, she is taken to a beautiful mansion, where she is puzzled to discover she is staying as a guest, much to the chagrin of the gruff and mysterious master of the house. Not wanting to admit that she doesn’t know what’s going on, Hattie pretends that everything is as it should be. As time goes on, however, she finds that her memory problems involve more than just her current circumstances. Why can’t she remember so many years of her life? Aided by an eccentric medium, Hattie struggles to solve the mysteries of her forgotten past and to help solve a murder in the process.
I had such a great time with this story. It captured the tone of an old-fashioned murder mystery, but with a supernatural twist. The first chapter pulled me in immediately, and there was never a dull moment. Every time I thought I had the story figured out, something completely unexpected happened. The characters were a pleasure to get to know. I especially enjoyed the medium’s character, with all of her unorthodox traits, oddities, and hilarious fashion choices. An unexpected romance tied together the threads of the story in an epic and fulfilling way, adding emotional depth to the story’s exciting climax.
This is so much more than a murder mystery. It’s not just a diverting story, but it also makes one think about life, the world, and the unknown. It’s well worth the time of any reader looking for something wholly unique and lots of fun. I’ll definitely be picking up another book by Rebecca Wildsmith soon. I rate this book an enthusiastic 5/5 stars.

This story sounds like a story of a woman suffering from dementia. I am intrigued by this possibility and the old fashioned murder mystery. I am adding this book to my bookshelves. I am looking forward to the laughter and the unexpected twists that this book provides. Thank you for this well-written review of a 5-star book.Alissa Nesson wrote: ↑06 Aug 2023, 11:20 [Following is a volunteer review of "Hattie Vavaseur" by M. Rebecca Wildsmith.]
