Tropical Scandal by David Myles Robinson is an intriguing and fast-paced legal thriller that whisks the reader away to enjoy the swaying palms and pounding turquoise surf of Hawaii. A legendary but dying trial attorney Isaac Goldblum reveals a shocking secret when he invites Pancho McMartin from the local high-rise law office over to his condo and pleads with him to represent his client Dayton Kalama, who has been arrested for the fatal poisoning of his grandmother. Could this simple boy be evil, greedy and far more dangerous than anyone could imagine? Or, is it an elaborate suicide?

Together with his private investigator, the ex-NFL linesman Drew Tulafono, as well as his quirky red-haired secretary Elise, the legal team endeavour to discover the truth. A love story unfolds in parallel as Mc Martin’s beautiful, dark-eyed lover Padma Dasari, the former medical examiner for Honolulu helps the investigation unravel shocking corruption within the justice system.

Tropical Scandal is superbly written with no page ever leaving the reader bored. The combination of fact and fiction leave one feeling intrigued and a little shocked, especially when positions of authority within the justice system are abused by those that should be protecting. The rich descriptions of this island paradise and the engaging main characters leave the reader eagerly turning pages and wanting more. The editing is completely professional with no errors.

What I really enjoyed about the novel was the way the author so masterfully wove the surfing heart of the tough defense attorney into the story and how he became vulnerable riding the ocean waves outside the courtroom. David Myles Robinson also addresses a question that almost every person has asked - how does a defense attorney represent a client knowing their client is probably guilty of the heinous offence that they have been charged with. In the end I was more than satisfied with the answer.

The only minor flaw for me was that the killer was known to the reader before the trial began. If there had perhaps been a surprise twist right at the end, it could make an excellent Hollywood movie. Despite this, the novel receives a worthy and well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. An excellent story!
