The book opens with a lot of self-reflective questions. After the death of his brother, he noticed a face with unforgettable red eyes staring back at him from within the mirror in the bathroom. He was there one second and gone the next. Shortly after this, his uncle Tony came to visit them for a few months, but he disappeared and then resurfaced in the canal with a slashed throat. These weren't even the weirdest events that happened. People started having sightings of the late Uncle Tony in the streets. It became so bad that their grandmother declared she was going to dig Tony up to prove his death, yet she passed away not long after this declaration. This family was followed by surreal happenings, and they had no answers as to why they happened. Were they haunted or cursed? Was it only bad luck?

Unfortunately, the weird occurrences weren't just happening to his family but to the whole town and school. Most of the strange and unfortunate things still felt like they were happening to him, though. How could you explain the terrible luck or curse their family and town had? What was behind all of it? I sure have my own idea of that answer, but let me know what you think once you have read this book!

I disliked only two things in the entire book. Firstly, it was the unnecessary and constant long sentences. In some cases, I had to reread a sentence because it was just too long to grasp all of the details embedded in it. Secondly, it was the grammar errors (mainly at the end of the book) that bothered me, as they are easy mistakes to pick up. I do believe that a round of editing and proofreading will fix them quickly.

I enjoyed everything else about this book, but I absolutely loved the book cover. It is attractive, sensual, and soft. It definitely pulled me in immediately when I saw it. I would rate An Unfortunate Beginning by S.D. Delorme 3 out of 5 stars. I would love to add another star once the errors have been fixed.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy mysteries and strange stories. This book is definitely a huge, strange mystery. I found only one instant of profanity and no sexual content at all. I would recommend this book to anyone over sixteen years of age.

A mystery centered around people who seem to have unusually bad luck seems intriguing, so I hope the author does proper proofreading. Thank you for your great review!
