Review of Best When Served Cold
Best When Served Cold by D. A. Dawson—the pen name of John A. Racek—is a military-themed action/espionage novel that follows Colonel Jubal Chain. After serving over twenty years in the military, Colonel Jubal retired to a mountain home in Nevada with his dogs, Odin and Thor. However, when he is recalled for a top-secret mission involving a friend, he is plunged into a world of deadly espionage and persistent revenge seekers who would stop at nothing until he is eliminated.
Dawson is a gifted and meticulous writer. He took his time to build up the story with expansive details while still maintaining a steady pace and a sense of intrigue throughout. His biography shows that he served in the military, and it is apparent in his extensive knowledge of military terms, protocols, and firearms.
Beyond its entertainment value, the book is a treasure trove of knowledge on many subjects. Dawson did well to drop tidbits of details about several things in the novel. I especially enjoyed reading the fun facts about the towns Jubal traversed on his way to D.C.
In addition, he crafted his characters with thought. I loved Jubal's personality. He is kind but also stern and ruthless when he needs to be, making him even more realistic and likable. The way the author dropped bits and pieces of Jubal's backstory throughout the story made him fascinating. It was nice to see his dogs, Odin and Thor, play an active role in the story.
That being said, I wish the book had been better edited. I encountered multiple grammatical and punctuation errors that negatively affected my reading experience. Again, the story ended satisfactorily, but I wish the antagonists had more character development. I would have appreciated more insight into their true identities and motives. Hopefully, the next book will provide more details since the story ended on a cliffhanger.
Best When Served Cold should be your next read if you enjoy espionage and military-themed novels. It was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational read. Hence, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. It would have earned a perfect rating, but the absence of professional editing is a drawback.
