In what has become an all too familiar occurrence in our world today, Jack Winnick’s The Date Farm opens with a violent and terrifying scene in a Beverly Hills Mall. A well-orchestrated attack is underway, with gas grenades and machine gun fire. The attackers go undetected as they enter the location, dressed in black, and succeed in creating chaos, death, and destruction in a matter of minutes.
This intense opening scene is a clue that this story has no intention of slowing down. The mall attack is the first step of a complex and highly organized plot to steal precious cargo from the United States by an Iranian terrorist group. With responsibility for the attack at the feet of a terrorist group, agents Lara Edmond and Uri Levin are called in.
Knowing the author's credentials makes this page-turner all the more thrilling. Jack Winnick possesses in-depth knowledge and experience on the topics he writes about. These include, but are not limited to, a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, a consultant on oil refinery projects, and experience writing about Middle East policy.
The author also excels at providing vivid descriptions of the book’s characters. In the second paragraph of Chapter 13, Captain Hastings is introduced. “His shirts were tailored to make the best use of his physical presence; he enjoyed the admiring glances he received, especially by the press.” His physical stature and level of vanity are evident in one sentence. This level of attention occurs throughout the book.
5 out of 5 This book is a thrilling read, full of twists and turns. The author leads the reader through this complex story faultlessly. Violence occurs throughout; however, it is appropriate for the context of the story’s action. It is the fourth book in a series featuring agents Lara and Uri. References are made to the previous novels; however, reading these in chronological order is unnecessary. This is recommended for anyone who enjoys political thrillers and stories of espionage.
