Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a supernatural thriller and the first book of the Gehenna series. The story begins with a tragedy at a community college in the small town of Lochton, Illinois. The moment Benjamin Poe arrives on the scene, a horrifying tale of deadly sins and the wrath of Hell begins.

Crighton Daemonium, Lucifer’s soul-catcher, is ruthless in his pursuit to capture sinners souls. During one of his hunts, Crighton is taken prisoner by The Sovereign Sector, a group of scientists infamous for experimenting on supernatural creatures. In captivity, Crighton meets the angel Ariel. Although they are natural enemies, the connection between them is undeniable. They quickly realize they must work together to escape their captors.

The Poe family story was sad to read, and Crighton’s involvement made me despise him. He was cruel and did not play fair in his game of souls. The writer then had me doing a complete turnabout, and I was amazed to find myself cheering for Crighton in the book’s second half! A sign of a great writer is when they can take the most detestable villains and make you feel compassion for them. There are many complexities to Crighton’s character, and McFarren did a great job bringing him to life for the reader.

Ariel is the epitome of all that is good in the world. Again, the writer did a great job developing a multi-faceted character that was easy to connect with. There is more to her than sweet innocence, and I look forward to reading more of her story in the next book of the Gehenna series.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I thought the writer did an excellent job of developing a suspenseful plot, and the depth of each character came through. Those who enjoy reading about paranormal romances with believable characters will love this book. There is profanity throughout the book and light sexual content. A nonconsensual sexual encounter may upset sensitive readers. The book seemed to have been professionally edited, as I did not find any errors. I found no negative aspects in this book and highly recommend it.
