Review of Jack

This murder mystery set in the Victorian era was written by J.S. Parker. Jack is only his second published work yet. It tells the awesome and capturing take of a very interesting fellow, Jack. Born to a surgeon dad and a doting mother, he was surrounded by much love growing up. At a tender age, he developed a flair for writing poetry. They were so good that his dad had them published under a pen name to preserve the identity of his young son so that people would take his work seriously.
At about the age of eighteen, Jack, originally named Frederick, began to have mental health issues, largely because of the dual personality he was forced to adopt because of his pen name. He deteriorated so much that his parents had no choice but to commit him to an asylum under the care of Dr. Goethe. En route to the hospital, Jack escaped from the van and his restraints using the tricks he learned from shadowing magicians. Free as a bird, the troubled Jack must fashion a world for himself. Find out what happens to him.
There were many things I liked about this book. It was a well-written murder mystery set in the Victorian era. The plot was well rounded, and the characters were well developed. The omniscient point of view helped the reader fully enjoy the book. There was adequate suspense, which kept me glued to the book right till the very end. The author put a lot of time into research to make this book what it is. I must commend that.
I learned a lot of things about the Victorian era from this book. I also learned about the secret cults that existed at that time, the type of police work that was available then, and the drug use of that era. The author also used a very descriptive style of writing, which made the book all the more enjoyable.
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was that it was a bit too lengthy for my liking. Also, I found a fee error. The book can use another round of editing to make it perfect. I rate it 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons already stated. I recommend it to lovers of murder mysteries and historical fiction.
