Nina Derbin, an older woman, had been looking at a rare copy of Mental Maladies, a book from 1886, when she noticed a message that appeared to have been scratched into the book by a fingernail. The message was simply "HELP HE". Nina's curiosity was piqued, and she decided to investigate further. Through a little bit of illegal borrowing of the book and a lot of amateur sleuthing, Nina managed to track down a woman who might hold some of the answers of those who had previously checked out the book. Then, in a strange turn of events, Nina found herself in the 19th century. As a woman in that time period, Nina soon realized she had little power, and the threat of being deemed hysterical and ending up in an asylum was a real threat for any woman. The historical details in this book added a lot of depth. I could tell that the author researched and was able to portray a full picture of the 1900s. I appreciated the attention to detail. The plight of women from that time period brought the mystery into context.

I also thought the character of Nina was fascinating. She is a woman in her 60s who had gone back to school and jumped at the chance to try and figure out the mystery of the book. I enjoyed seeing an older protagonist at the forefront of a mystery and how Nina was still filled with so much life and curiosity.

I am happy to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There was nothing that I disliked about this book, so I have no reason not to give it a perfect score. It was also exceptionally well-edited; I did not spot a single error in the entire book. It is perfect for readers who are looking for a gripping story that involves time travel and mystery. This book does not contain any explicit content, though it does have some strong language. I do believe that it would be suitable for both teens and adults. I strongly recommend this book and would read other books written by this author!

Wow, a book with an 'older' protagonist! Until I read your review, I never even thought about how rare that actually is! I loved the ominous scratched messge in the book and the historical references to a time that was much more dangerous for women. It's nice to see that the character was also portrayed as full of life and curiousity - makes me wonder how many 'older' readers there are out there who don't feel represented or even forgotten. The reviews I have been reading drew my attention to this book genre. I haven't been reading C/T/M/H novel, but I believe there are lessons to be learnt from them.
