Review of Treachery in Texas
Ben Stubbs had adopted a semi-reclusive lifestyle six years after his father passed away and had come to inherit the trust his father left. He sometimes left his comfort zone to his love of adventures and the outdoors. However, Ben spent much of his free time in his penthouse apartment watching sports. One day, he came across a TV station showing a deer hunt. He found it thrilling. It sparked his curiosity to the point where he sought out deer shooting as a new adventure. Ben was unaware that this one choice would drastically alter his life in ways he never imagined.
Treachery in Texas by James Rickman is a unique book because the plot isn't formulaic. Even though it is presented as a romance novel, none of the book's events follow the typical plot that readers will anticipate in a romance novel. The events leading to Ben discovering his attraction to another character are ones I'll never have seen coming in a romance book. The plot is original, lovely, and unlike anything I've ever read or seen in a romance novel.
The story's unpredictable nature was another aspect of the novel that I appreciated. The author used such meticulous detail that it would be difficult to predict what would happen next without doing it erroneously. This increased the excitement of reading the book by adding a little tension to the entire experience. Most vivid for me during the read was Ron Sutton's investigations, which I wouldn't go into details about to prevent spoilers.
The story's directness to the point is another quality of the book for which I applaud the author. There was no skirting the issue by writing about incidents unrelated to the primary plot to produce a bulky write-up. Every subplot led to the story's climax, from Ben seeing the deer hunting show to meeting Becky, Sue Ellen, and Fred.
There are some typos and grammar issues in the book. As a result, I will take a star from the rating. There's nothing else I dislike. Therefore, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend Treachery in Texas to you if you enjoy novels with elements of uncommon romance.
