Review of Escape from Tuoyawon
Upon reaching the crescendo on page 156, my heart nearly leaped from my chest. "Escape from Tuoyawon" exceeded all my expectations, prompting the immediate thought that if I ever encountered the author, I would gladly share a piece of my heart regarding the enthralling ending. Picture eagerly anticipating the resolution of the protagonist's journey, only to be confronted with an unexpected twist that leaves you exclaiming, 'What?!'
But enough of my monologue. "Escape from Tuoyawon" is a captivating work of fiction by R. Murrey Haist that leaves readers yearning for more. Chrissy, fleeing the town, experiences a car crash and is rescued by Reverend Sounders, with the entire community rallying behind her, particularly Liz, who eventually becomes a close confidante. The question looms: why was she escaping, and now that she has chosen to stay, what destiny awaits her? The answers lie within the pages of this concise novel. Secure a copy while you can.
This book gripped me from the outset. Being privy to the inner turmoil of the protagonist from the very beginning is a powerful narrative choice. The author adeptly handles the conversations, which is a standout feature for me. The conversations are compelling, with Chrissy's inner thoughts driving the narrative. It feels as though you are intimately connected to her life, and the meticulous development of Chrissy's character, flaws and all, renders her highly relatable. Through Chrissy, the reader witnesses a young woman striving to prove herself to be a formidable accountant, a career she has chosen for herself—a sentiment I resonated with on many levels. I saw reflections of myself in her experiences with having a crush on a friend and could understand why her affection for Ryan led her to overlook numerous red flags.
I appreciate that Chrissy summoned the courage, guided by the wisdom of her mother and grandmother, to act according to her convictions, even when it seemed perilous. I found myself pondering the potential consequences if the townsfolk were to discover her true identity, feeling a shared sense of trepidation. The supporting characters, notably Rev. Sounders and his wife, inject much-needed comic relief, perfectly timed amidst the gripping suspense.
Through Chrissy’s character, we are reminded that not all that glitters is gold. Chrissy refused to listen to her friends. She failed to heed her instincts. She ignored all the red flags. And now, peace of mind is the next gold she is willing to invest in.
This book is a must-read. I found nothing to dislike; it is impeccably written. However, I found just two errors in it. It stands as a perfect choice for a brief escape, whether during a flight or when unwinding by the pool or riverside. For these reasons, I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
I enthusiastically recommend "Escape from Tuoyawon" to lovers of fiction and well-crafted drama. I am confident they will find immense enjoyment in this literary gem.
