[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Life I Needed" by Juliette Nieves.]
Linsey is a seemingly ordinary woman. She works as a forensic accountant, is engaged to a loving man, Levi, and enjoys a nice glass of Chardonnay to unwind after a long day. However, after learning that one of the people she was investigating had either been murdered or committed suicide, Linsey's life begins to fall apart. The case file disappeared from her computer at work, she received a flash drive at her door with an alarming video, and one of her coworkers was acting odd. Linsey's coping mechanisms are unhealthy, and her life begins to spiral out of control. Will she be able to figure out what is happening before the pieces of her life are too shattered to put back together? Find out in the exciting novel The Life I Needed by Juliette Nieves.
This book has such strong and interesting characters. Linsey's background was not the most stable, with an alcoholic mother and a father addicted to gambling. She spent her childhood moving from place to place because of her father's gambling. Having a stable life with a best friend and a fiance was such a huge step in the right direction for Linsey. This meant that all the troubles happening to her were even more devastating because of how she reverted to her bad habits. It made rooting for her an easy task.
I also enjoyed how the plot developed. At first, it was just little things that seemed to go wrong. However, they started to snowball as the book progressed. Nieves laid out the mystery in a way that was not overwhelming for the reader but was extremely stressful for the characters.
I can think of nothing I disliked about this book. I did not notice any errors; it was exceptionally well-edited. With these two facts in mind, I am delighted to award this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. It was a joy to read. It does contain strong language and some sexual content and is overall an intense book. For those reasons, I believe it is best suited for adults. Those who enjoy psychological thrillers with complex and compelling characters would enjoy this book. It would be a great choice for a long trip or killing a few hours at the airport. I highly recommend this book and would read other books by Nieves!
