Rebecca Barrett's "The Rat Catcher" is a captivating crime mystery novel. The story centers around Hugo August, an investigator delving into a perplexing death. Ruth Camden, an elderly resident of a historic Mobile, Alabama district, was discovered deceased in her attic under enigmatic circumstances. She had deep ties to the esteemed Camden family and held a prominent position within her community due to her social status and lineage. Initially assumed to be a result of a heart attack, further scrutiny unveiled a far more complex situation. The presence of Hugo's former girlfriend at the crime scene added an intriguing layer to the narrative.

Standing by his side, Bebe Prescott, whom Hugo believed he had moved on from, rekindled emotions he thought were buried. Bebe has a connection to the deceased woman and becomes a possible suspect. Will Hugo manage to maintain his objectivity throughout the investigation? The book unveils the answer to this question. The story is exceptionally engaging, brimming with suspense, mystery, and all the essential elements of a compelling crime novel. Rebecca has skillfully woven a tale that keeps readers in suspense until the very end. The array of supporting characters and their intertwining romantic subplots enrich the narrative. Characters like Junior, Evie, Sharon, and many others contribute depth and intrigue to the storyline.

This masterfully crafted novel leaves nothing to be desired. I was enthralled from the first page and couldn't put it down until I reached the final one. There was nothing I didn't like in this book. The text is impeccably edited and devoid of errors even upon close inspection. I particularly admired the protagonist, Hugo, and found the supporting character Junior to be equally compelling. I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I eagerly anticipate reading subsequent installments in this series and highly recommend this novel to all enthusiasts of mystery and suspense in crime literature. It is an absolute must-read for anyone who appreciates the genre.
