I started The Date Farm without knowing that it was the 4th installment of the series. However, the story still played nicely without me having any background at the beginning of the tale.
The book starts out by describing a popular scene at a mall. Surrounded by people of all ages, races, and religions just trying to enjoy their day. Then an armed group of black-clad men enter the mall and open fire on the crowds within. Not one of the assailants is alive when the police arrive, having committed suicide. We are then introduced to the main characters FBI agent Lara Edmond and Mossad agent Uri Levin. Lara and Uri, having met through work, are now a married couple that work together and they are called into action. They meet with the head of the local FBI office in LA as well as some people that they knew from previous cases and some that are new before they visit the once-lively shopping center.
We move through the next chapter focusing on an Arabic Sheikh, Sheikh Zainal Abidin, who is determined to be the person to take America down. He works with a group of young men to plan a different form of attack on the US nation. We also learn that Sheikh Abidin works with some high-up people in the chain of Arabic custody.
An attack on New York, different than the one from the mall, comes next. Abidin, using his team, takes control of two different buildings, the Federal Reserve and Chase Manhattan Bank, causing American law officers to presume they are after gold hidden away inside the Reserve but readers soon learn that is not the case. The FBI starts their approach into the buildings to try and locate the teams of terrorists. We follow the ascent through the buildings until both teams are surrounded and Lara and Uri with their teams are taken. We learn that Sheikh Abidin had a plan foiled by the lovely couple and is there to destroy them before they can point him out as the suspect.
We follow the rescue through the next couple of chapters and learn that the Sheikh is able to escape with the rare material that he took from the Chase Bank. Lara and Uri fly to the East following the Sheikh to Iran in an attempt to locate both the crates and the man in charge. They go undercover and meet many characters on their trip, staying on a farm and working to get close to the stolen materials.
Life is difficult for the two agents as they go from undercover, kidnapped, rescued, and kidnapped again. You can tell that throughout this story they really care for each other and look out for the other. There is a nice twist to be discovered in dealing with betrayal that flows smoothly through the book.
I rate this story 4 out of 4 and I would like to recommend it to those who like spy novels or action-packed books that are fast paced. I loved this book and would really enjoy reading the others in the series.
