Review of Love and Murder
[Following is a volunteer review of "Love and Murder" by Irv Arenberg.]
Dr. Irv Arenberg's Love and Murder delves into Vincent Van Gogh's final days in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, exploring his relationships, mental health struggles, and the mysterious circumstances of his death. This book offers a unique perspective on the renowned artist's life, focusing on the last seventy days of Van Gogh's existence. It delves into the controversies surrounding his demise, pondering whether it was suicide or homicide. Additionally, the book highlights Van Gogh's childhood, marked by mental illness and epilepsy, alongside his turbulent career and personal connections. Despite facing adversities like epilepsy and perceived failure, Van Gogh remained dedicated to his art, driven by an unwavering passion for painting. Dr. Irv also examines Van Gogh's bond with Dr. Paul Gachet, suggesting a possible role in the artist's death. Despite his hardships, Van Gogh's determination and artistic fervour brought him posthumous success, immortalizing works like 'Starry Night' and 'The Potato Eaters."
The section of the book that resonated with me the most was the intricate portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh's character. It skillfully unfolded the life of this artist, often misunderstood by society. The author's adept weaving of suspense, mystery, and elements of crime into a compelling narrative captured my attention. Each piece of information revealed, from historical facts to Van Gogh's personal experiences, was meticulously presented, making every part of the book thoroughly enjoyable. Van Gogh's character, depicted as possessing immense artistic brilliance, also offered a profound understanding of the struggles with mental health. Dr. Irv's approach, blending investigation and storytelling, provided a vivid and comprehensive analysis of Van Gogh's final days and the perplexing events leading to his death. What truly touched me was the empathy evoked for Vincent, recognizing the hardships he faced in his upbringing and the lack of appreciation, juxtaposed with his enduring and celebrated talent.
Within this otherwise captivating book, there were elements that I couldn't help but dislike. One significant aspect was the excessive detailing in certain chapters, elongating the narrative beyond my preference, although, admittedly, some chapters did benefit from these descriptive passages. Moreover, I found the portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh's mistreatment, the absence of maternal affection, and the betrayal by his doctor particularly distressing. These aspects, unfortunately, contributed to my overall sense of dislike toward certain parts of the book, casting shadows on an otherwise engaging storytelling experience. This book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
