Official Review: Inflight Terror by Ian Maxwell

When I read the blurb for Inflight Terror by Ian Maxwell, I had to read the book. I love a good spy story and I also love humor. From the first page to the last I was chuckling to myself, wondering what these improbable friends would get themselves into.
The book begins in the war torn Middle East as two unlikely, and unqualified, friends embark on a quest to clear their respective countries’ name. Worried about what the world thinks of them, and in particular what conspiracy theorists in the United States think, they come up with a plan while sitting in a bar. Of course, as with any drunken plan, problems arise and their plans get changed in unimaginable ways.
The story is dialogue heavy and I found myself not really caring what happened with the characters’ plans, but what trouble they could get into. One chapter after the next caused more chaos for them, until the unexpected ending.
As funny as the book was, riddled with dirty humor, there were a few word usage errors. Nothing really took me out of the story, as the errors seemed to be more typos than anything. Primarily the word ‘of’ was used several times when ‘off’ was meant. Sometimes the author would end a scene just to pick it up exactly where left off. It felt as if the two scenes should have been one.
It was pleasant in length, and thus avoided reader exhaustion. The plot was a bit ridiculous, as was meant to be, and the characters over the top. Two of the characters seemed almost as after thoughts, yet still added to the parallel plot line of a serial killer terrorizing the skies.
The author explained his love of blundering spy humor and it shows beautifully through his writing. His homage to one of his favorite adult cartoons was a fun way to show this as well, and anyone familiar with it will get a kick out of it. The lengthy dialogue passages just got funnier the more the characters rambled on.
Overall, I give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It was witty and fun, with no basis in reality. Easy to read, it contained a lot of pop culture that may be lost on the younger Millennial, but not on the seasoned one. Anyone who likes dirty humor, blundering idiots, and goofy spies will enjoy this book. If sexual humor offends, it’s probably not the right book. The author has a clear handle on what’s going on in world politics and that’s what makes this so funny.
