A House of her Own by Patricia Dusenbury is a fictional story revolving around the life of Claire Marshall, a home renovator. Published in October of 2016, A House of Her Own is book number three in the Claire Marshall Mysteries. Although this novel is considered book three in the series, it read well as a standalone, and I didn’t feel that there was any missing information that should have been gathered from the other two books.

Claire Marshall is a part owner of a small home renovation business in the iconic city of New Orleans. New to the world of courthouse sales, Claire stumbles upon a live auction where she is surprised to see that several homes are selling for mere pennies on the dollar of their worth. One home stands out to Claire, and the renovator in her comes alive, seeing the opportunity for an excellent re-sale. Although she’s never one to make thoughtless decisions, Claire jumps out of character and makes a spur of the moment decision to bid on one of the homes. Never imagining that she would actually win, Claire is in total shock to find that she is the only bidder, and walks away as a home owner.

Claire’s cheerful shock dissipates quickly when she is told the news that everyone but her seems to already know. The word around town is that the house Claire bought is haunted, and most people are too scared to go near the home, much less to buy it. Along with a chilling ghost story that kept my pages turning, Claire’s love life is thrown in to the mix with the introduction of her famous racing boyfriend, Tony. The drama of Claire’s personal life starts to mix in with her work, leaving her feeling like she has nowhere to turn on more than one occasion.

As a consistent fan of ghost stories, I was really pleased with how this book kept my interest. The pace of the novel was smooth enough to keep me interested, and contained a story line that was easy to follow. I felt like Claire was a character I could relate to, and her passion to see the best side of things was inspiring to read. The dialogue between characters was developed in a natural way, which gave off a realistic feeling. I really liked that the story bounced back and forth from present to past tense, giving enough time to each important event. While told in the past tense, the story evolved to explain how the ghost involved came to haunt the home. The chilling discoveries that Claire digs up are unlike any I had read about before.

Along with the great storyline, I found it to be a plus that the book was edited well. I found no errors to disrupt my reading, which helped the story flow. I’m happy to give A House of Her Own a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, and would gladly recommend it to other readers who enjoy suspense, thrillers, and ghost stories. I do have to give a reader’s discretion warning, as there are some violent scenes that would not be appropriate for some readers.

Great review! When I started reading your review, I realized I reviewed Book 2, Secrets, Lies, and Homicide. I thought the author's name sounded familiar. :) Glad you enjoyed the book!

Awesome! Sounds like you really enjoyed the book. I like the idea of ending up with a home that everyone knows is haunted but you. I hope the ending is happy, though!
