Review of Gold among the Trees
Peter King's captivating historical fiction, "Gold Among the Trees," will have readers eagerly turning pages with anticipation. The author masterfully weaves together multiple tales to create a compelling story. The narrative begins with a prologue introducing Meredith, the 9th Viscount Hantington, known as Merry, who is contacted by the Permanent Secretary for the Treasury regarding suspicious asset movements in Hong Kong. Recognized for his problem-solving skills, Merry decides to investigate and invites his academic friend Peter Holroyd to dinner at the Athenaeum. He proposes a research project related to a 17th-century ship. Initially hesitant due to past dangerous experiences, Holroyd is reassured by Merry that the project involves pure research. Merry discloses someone's search for the ship in connection with recent capital movements, suggesting a visiting professorship for Holroyd on Vancouver Island. Despite mixed feelings from his wife Pearl, Holroyd agrees.
The story unfolds as a group of university students, led by the fearless and curious Annie, stumbles upon a gruesome find in the forbidden burial grounds of a First Nations band. The unearthing of a murdered woman's remains sets off a series of events that not only plunge the characters into a murder investigation but also force them to confront the cultural complexities and historical injustices that linger beneath the surface.
The plot is intricately layered, with multiple storylines converging to reveal a broader picture. The introduction of a historical element, represented by the ancient remains discovered alongside the murder victim, adds a fascinating dimension to the narrative. As the investigation unfolds, the reader is taken on a journey through the past and present, uncovering secrets that bridge generations. "Gold Among the Trees" successfully combines suspenseful elements with a nuanced exploration of cultural identity and societal dynamics. The author's ability to evoke a sense of place, from the serene beauty of the wilderness to the tension-filled village meetings, adds a rich layer to the narrative. The dialogue is authentic, and the pacing keeps the reader engaged from start to finish.
There is nothing to dislike in this book. It is perfectly edited; even upon close examination, I couldn't find any errors. I wholeheartedly give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. In conclusion, Peter King has crafted a thought-provoking and engaging novel in "Gold Among the Trees." The seamless blend of mystery, cultural exploration, and historical intrigue makes it a compelling read for those who enjoy a well-crafted narrative that goes beyond the conventions of a typical crime novel.
