Six months ago Jeannie Johal faked her death and fled Mumbai to get away from her controlling and abusive husband. She craved the independence she could never have while living with him. So, when the hospital where she worked as a surgeon was blown up, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to start her new life. She arrived in Canada – her new home – with a new identity and a new job investigating harmed patients in hospitals. She believed this was her fresh start.

However, things seldom work out as planned. What she thought would be a beautiful new life in Canada turned into murder investigations, racist colleagues, and someone out to get her. See Me: A Jeannie Johal Thriller by Susann Camus is the riveting tale of Jeannie’s adventures uncovering secrets that some believe should stay hidden.

I found this story thrilling. I honestly had no idea where each storyline would end up, which immersed me in the world the author created. I loved how complex each character was. They all had layers and surprised me as the story went on. If there’s one thing I dislike in a novel it is one-dimensional characters, so I’m very happy that was not the case with this one.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the author’s writing style. The storytelling itself was fantastic, but I found the dialogue to be jerky and unsmooth. The conversations felt very unnatural and fake, which almost took me out of the hold the story had me in. There were also a few errors I found in the book, so I believe it would benefit from another round of editing. However, despite these two criticisms, I genuinely enjoyed my time reading this book. The author is very talented, and I would love to read more from her. So, for the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I would recommend this book to readers who are typically drawn to thriller novels. The suspense and action in this novel will keep them on the edge of their seats. It is only suitable for mature readers, as there are a few violent and subtle sexual themes included throughout the story.

Thank you for the detailed review. The book storyline sounds thrilling. I like that the author mentioned the many challenges encountered in modern societies, and the fact that the characters are complex. I understand what you mean by not liking the dialogues. From my experience as a reader, when the dialogues are not good I become disconnected from the story. Hopefully there will be another round of editing.

This seems like an intriguing thriller with a protagonist who has a complicated backstory. The title suggests a project that includes sequels, so I hope the author will improve the dialogues. Thank you for your great review!

I generally enjoy thriller novels and medical thrillers in particular. I appreciate that the author created a cast of well developed characters. It seems like these characters were able to carry the story despite the clunky dialogue. The author has great writing potential that will hopefully continue to improve as the series progresses. I downloaded a copy of the book and look forward to checking it out. Thanks for the helpful review!

Great review! Congrats to Jeanie for plucking up the courage to leave. Although her new life doesn't unfold as planned, it seems thrilling and at the very least is a life in which she is free to make her own choices without fear. The storytelling seems enthralling and I will be getting my free copy. Well done to the author on #BOTD.

Thanks for the review. I agree with you that some of the conversations were unreal. For instance, I found the conversation between May and her husband Peter to be quite awkward. I was also appalled by the direct manner of confrontatation portraid in the first chapter between Jeannie and the male doctor. However, the suspense build up in the book kept me asking for more, so the storyline is compelling.

The story line sounds intriguing. A narrow escape from a abusive husband Jeannie at last gets the freedom she craves. A new life in Canada not only gives her the freedom she craved but also pushes her into murder investigations and racist comments. Does she overcome this hurdle. Read the book to know. Congrats on BOTD.
