[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "See Me: A Jeannie Johal Thriller" by Susann Camus.]
Six months ago Jeannie Johal faked her death and fled Mumbai to get away from her controlling and abusive husband. She craved the independence she could never have while living with him. So, when the hospital where she worked as a surgeon was blown up, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to start her new life. She arrived in Canada – her new home – with a new identity and a new job investigating harmed patients in hospitals. She believed this was her fresh start.
However, things seldom work out as planned. What she thought would be a beautiful new life in Canada turned into murder investigations, racist colleagues, and someone out to get her. See Me: A Jeannie Johal Thriller by Susann Camus is the riveting tale of Jeannie’s adventures uncovering secrets that some believe should stay hidden.
I found this story thrilling. I honestly had no idea where each storyline would end up, which immersed me in the world the author created. I loved how complex each character was. They all had layers and surprised me as the story went on. If there’s one thing I dislike in a novel it is one-dimensional characters, so I’m very happy that was not the case with this one.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the author’s writing style. The storytelling itself was fantastic, but I found the dialogue to be jerky and unsmooth. The conversations felt very unnatural and fake, which almost took me out of the hold the story had me in. There were also a few errors I found in the book, so I believe it would benefit from another round of editing. However, despite these two criticisms, I genuinely enjoyed my time reading this book. The author is very talented, and I would love to read more from her. So, for the reasons mentioned above, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
I would recommend this book to readers who are typically drawn to thriller novels. The suspense and action in this novel will keep them on the edge of their seats. It is only suitable for mature readers, as there are a few violent and subtle sexual themes included throughout the story.
