The Middle Reaches by L. Andrew Cooper is an exceptionally intense and dark horror-fantasy ongoing series available on Kindle Vella. It stands out as a chilling and remarkably bizarre piece of art, delivering the ultimate thrilling and spooky experience that fantasy and horror enthusiasts crave. With 44 episodes currently released and the series still ongoing, I delved into eight episodes for this review. The narrative's power to evoke an immediate desire for more is undeniable; if I had additional Kindle Vella tokens, I would eagerly dive into the next episodes. This story possesses the captivating ability to keep readers on the edge, yearning to unravel what unfolds next.

The story unfolds with Nick experiencing a dream set in a peculiar cave and encountering a bizarre tentacled creature that inflicts simultaneous pain mixed with pleasure by licking and tearing his skin. Upon waking, Nick finds himself sexually aroused and haunted by recurrent dreams spanning a decade, coinciding with the mysterious disappearance of his friend Sheldon Vere. Reconnecting with his high school friends after years of silence, they decide to gather at Nick's place. During the reunion, all five of them confess to sharing identical dreams of a place named "The Middle Reaches," described by Sheldon as a realm of bizarre, unholy deities and creatures. This place, accessible by following a creek in an overgrown wood between two roads named 'Action Way,' becomes the focal point of their yearning.

Contemplating a return, they grapple with unclear memories of past visits. Despite skepticism, they embark on a journey, feeling irresistibly drawn to the enigmatic realm. Their decision to explore this supernatural place intensifies as they sense an irresistible pull, which has influenced their bodies and minds for the past decade. A planned picnic takes an unexpected turn, with strange occurrences leading them toward the inevitable—the direction of the creek's current, which leads to "The Middle Reaches." Will they make it out alive this time? Or does fate have something else in store for them, something cruel, bizarre, horrifying yet highly pleasurable, a mix of pain and pleasure?

The most impressive aspect is the story's intensity, featuring chilling occurrences and spooky experiences for the characters. The author's commendable ability to craft such a plot is evident throughout. The series is replete with dark, bizarre, and terrifying scenes that sent shivers running down my spine. I hesitated to go to the bathroom at night and avoided dark rooms—it's that spooky. Simultaneously, I couldn't put my phone down, engrossed in each episode. I genuinely can't find an appropriate word to express my satisfaction and my strong urge to know more. Each scene was vivid, showcasing the author's amazing writing ability. If words can evoke this much terror, a visual adaptation into a web series would be phenomenal.

The author's thoughtful warning at the start of the first episode regarding violent and mature content was considerate. Additionally, the length of each episode was perfect, neither too long nor too short. It wouldn't matter to me, as I don't think I would get bored even if the episodes were long due to my immersion in the plot. Different fonts for certain words aided in understanding the significance between character conversations, enhancing clarity. The author's description of scenes from different characters' perspectives helped me understand their thoughts. The character building is highly innovative, with each having a unique personality, making it enjoyable to read. The diverse characters include someone mysterious, injecting humor even in terrifying situations, a carefree character, and a highly logical one. Casual conversations felt relatable and easy to comprehend. The author skillfully balanced transitions from dreams to reality, making it seamless. Until the 8th episode, the author maintained suspense, keeping me excited. Overall, this book is packed with mystery, horror, and fantasy, leaving an indelible mark in my mind.

I found nothing to dislike about this book. Personally, I enjoy dark, bizarre, and erotic themes, so delving into the episodes was thoroughly enjoyable. I'm intensely curious about the characters' fate, wishing I had more tokens. It's crucial to note that the series includes frequent extreme curse words, sexual descriptions, and vivid, cruel, and bizarre death depictions, which are worth noting for those sensitive to such content. For me, however, these elements pose no issue. Remarkably, the book series is impeccably edited, devoid of any errors, heightening the overall reading experience.

In conclusion, choosing this book offers an exhilarating thrill. With that in mind, I confidently rate it a well-deserved 5 out of 5. There's no reason not to give it a perfect rating. I recommend this to mature audiences, horror, fantasy, and mystery enthusiasts, and those with a special interest in bizarre topics. I struggle to find words to express how much I enjoyed this book. Truly captivated, I highly recommend this book.
