[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Priceless" by Dennis Bailey.]
James receives an unexpected visit from the police, informing him of Pretence's death. Despite not feeling joyous about her demise, James questions his connection to her. Their acquaintance was solely through the US effing-PEPFAR program, and he had minimal knowledge of her; she was neither a family member nor a friend. However, the purpose of the police visit becomes evident when they bring him to the station for a statement. To his surprise, he discovers a love note from Pretence detailing a nonexistent relationship. This raises questions: Why would Pretence fabricate a connection, and how did this love note end up in police possession? Is James adept at deception, potentially linked to Pretence’s death? Or could this be an orchestrated setup, and if so, who might be behind it? Uncover the answers in Dennis Bailey's Priceless as James ventures to Kitgum, Pretence's workplace, seeking information and encountering someone named Priceless.
The narrative unfolds as a captivating action thriller, maintaining suspense from the very beginning. It skillfully weaves between the past and present chapters of James' life, from his escape with his cousin Mugisha during the Rwanda massacre to his subsequent journey, ultimately joining the UN. The storyline is intriguing, introducing a diverse set of characters at well-timed intervals. The author incorporates humor effectively, leading to occasional laughter during my reading experience. James' interactions with his father, Stan, and particularly his boss, Harry, were consistently fascinating, characterized by a constant exchange of jokes that never seemed to be in short supply.
Despite the absence of clear chapter headings indicating subjects, I observed subtle numbering by the side while reading, helping to distinguish one chapter from another. Additionally, the occasional challenge of discerning the speaker in conversations did not diminish my interest in the book, and these aspects were negligible in terms of my overall enjoyment of the story.
I rate this book five out of five stars because the mentioned factors did not hinder my interest in the book. Despite encountering some errors while reading, it is evident that the book underwent professional editing.
I recommend this book to enthusiasts of historical fiction, non-fiction, and action thrillers. To enhance your reading experience, I recommend keeping a dictionary nearby to fully immerse yourself in the narrative.
