Official Review: The Wolf of Dorian Gray

The Wolf of Dorian Gray by Brian S. Ference is a new take on a classic. I would say that this book is a thriller/horror story. This story actually has a moral that will have you reevaluating how you live your life. Would you change your behavior or how you treat others if you could see a visual of your soul?
This story takes place in a time that women were supposed to stay pure, yet at the same time, debauchery was the name of the game. Sage was an artist with a gentle soul. She was also in love with Dorian Gray. While they were out walking one day, they were able to save a wolf pup. Thus begins the look into Dorian’s demise. It starts with a painting.
What I really liked about this story is that it gives a look at how our personal choices in conduct can affect others without us realizes it. When we become self-absorbed or busy following the “in” crowd, we essentially put on blinders to the rest of humanity. Dorian’s character is a prime example of this fact. The painting keeps him updated in just how far gone his soul is. You can almost feel the different emotions that go through some of the characters as they struggle to find their way.
I did find some of the character weak-willed, but that is what made them an indispensable part of the story. They were the ones that suffered for the actions of others. Of course, some of the blame can be put on the character of Helen. She is not happy unless she is the center of attention and can take credit for someone’s success or failure. This is one of the few books where I actually feel sorry for the monster that is doing the killings. To me, he is also a victim.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars because this is a very entertaining book. I felt for sure that one thing was going to happen, and it went totally in a different direction. I find myself wanting to read the next installment of this book as I need to know what happens next. If you are looking for a happily ever after, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for romance, probably not this book either, although it does skirt the edges. To me, this is a book about betrayal, morals (or the lack thereof), and self realization.
