Jace Grazer has returned to his small hometown of Willowcreek after being away for two years. As he drives through town, memories come flooding back. He stops to watch a passing train, feeling nervous and excited to see his family again.

When Jace arrives at his family's home, things seem off. His brother Dane accuses him of something but won't say what. At dinner, the family discusses their father's vineyard business, and Jace's mother mentions an upcoming surprise. Though tired from his journey, Jace can't sleep due to swirling thoughts.

The next day, tensions rise further when Jace learns his friend Oliver was in an accident. He goes to visit, but the police stop him, taking him and his family to the station for questioning. Though confused, Jace stands up for his father when accused of an event on their property.

Back home, Jace finds his father working late in the fields. Hearing a suspicious bang, Jace investigates in his truck but gets stuck in the mud. As he works to free the truck, Dane unexpectedly appears, seeming distressed. Their argument ends when Dane walks away, deeply upsetting Jace.

Struggling to sleep again that night due to guilt, Jace decides to sneak away from home. However, his sudden departure only makes the family more worried and the police more suspicious of him. With many questions unanswered and rising tensions on all sides, Jace returns to find the atmosphere in Willowcreek is far from the happy homecoming he'd anticipated. What does the future hold for him?

"A Walk Through the Grapes" by David Jackson is a captivating and entertaining novel I would readily recommend. Even though the protagonist's life is so difficult, the tension and suspense the book gives, as you constantly wonder if things will turn out better for him, are nothing to go by. I wonder why he made some of the decisions he made, though. I have nothing crucial to criticize about the book. Since it is entertaining and well written overall, I award it 5 out of 5 stars. I found no objective errors, so the book was professionally edited. The few I found were more in dialogue, so I couldn't list them.

Harmony in chaos. It's all a matter of perspective.
