[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Whispering Palms" by Annette Leigh.]
The Whispering Palms by Annette Leigh is a crime and mystery fiction novel revolving around an investigator uncovering the sudden disappearance of a young lady and the truth behind her mother’s death.
Andrea Yates is a private investigator and fiancee to Simon, a relationship that seemed perfect to the public but had challenges from Andie’s perspective. After some hesitation, she accepts a contract from Maureen Daniels to find her daughter, who mysteriously disappeared two years ago. The hesitation was due to the investigation location being the same place Andie dreaded, where her mother died when she was little. She then used this as an opportunity to discover the mystery surrounding her mother’s death. It caused disapproval from her husband and grandmother, but she insisted. Andie enlisted the help of Mac to find Summer Daniels, who was reported missing while on an expedition. Arriving at Bayswater, Andie and Mac uncover several mysterious happenings and shenanigans on the premises. As the investigations progress, they find a relationship between Summer’s disappearance and Andie's mother’s death. How does this contract affect Andie’s marital status? Do you think their investigations were successful? Read this thrilling piece to find out.
The book was factual; reading it made me feel like I was a character in a murder mystery movie. There were twenty-seven chapters, with some closing sections. Several characters were introduced throughout the novel, which were well-developed. The author did well by making the book average in length with a favorable storyline. The book used links in the table of contents for easy navigation. I admire the author’s skill in writing a good crime novel. The book concluded approvingly, with the author giving acknowledgments to whom it’s due. It also contained a link for readers to check out other publications.
I had no boredom while reading due to the unending suspense. Each chapter kept readers enthralled for more. The book was unpredictable, as it came with different plot twists. Jake was a character I grew suspicious of. I was impressed with Andie for not letting her guard down in her relationship with him. It’d be impressive to act on a similar storyline on stage. A character I loved and admired was Mac due to his sharp detective instinct. I felt the betrayal Andie felt by those she regarded as close.
One of the greatest lessons I learned was not putting full trust in someone to avoid disappointments. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I only spotted two errors, showing it’s professional editing. I found nothing to dislike in the book. The book is recommended to lovers of crime and mystery novels. This would be a great read for audiences aged 16 and older.
