"E M P Honeymoon" is not only a tale of the crash landing following the apocalyptic scenario of an electromagnetic pulse attack but also an unconscious investigation of the vulnerability of romantic relationships in the twenty-first century. Kelly and Tom's honeymoon is the standard material you'd see in a glossy magazine spread—until it isn't. The EMP not only jams all the power sources but also wipes out the very existence of the place of their relaxation.

It isn't just that one must survive the physical hardship; the question is whether their bond can stay afloat in this unbelievably difficult environment. The mutually experienced fear and forced accommodation are quite a contrast to the lavish honeymoon ideal, however. The intensity with which Mercer depicts the debates, the unarticulated resentments that flare up, and the occasions of unforeseen warmth and tenderness are strikingly close to reality in crisis.

The EMP conspiracy plot becomes a metaphor for the unexpected forces, just as the unpredictable forces can even be a break of the most romantic of pairings. Villains and heroes exist traditionally, but the main conflict occurs in a forced relationship between Kelly and Tom.

The most captivating aspect of this book is the very reason behind my 5-star rating. Through skillful editing, the sheer force of its message was able to hold my attention and prevent any feelings of boredom. I can confidently say that there is nothing unfavorable about this book. Thanks to Dorothy May Mercer.

Barely a profound meditation on relationships, "E M P Honeymoon" nonetheless does a great job of portraying both the power and the fragility of a couple who are in the midst of an extreme event. If you are up for a survival thriller that will make you think about something more than the mere rebuilding of society and its mechanics, this is the book you have been searching for, as it turns out to be surprisingly relevant to the reader.
