The story centers on Evie and her family. Godwin was discovered dead in a pickup truck when his daughters found him. Sonny, a law enforcement officer, arrived at the scene to investigate. He also interviewed the daughters. Evie, heartbroken by her father's death, reflected on some of the things he had said before passing away. One day, while going through her father’s belongings with her half-brother, they uncovered information that perplexed them, leading them to believe that there were undisclosed aspects of their father's life. Consequently, Evie reached out to Sonny to conduct an investigation into these matters.

Bitter Lakes by R.L. Scifres is a captivating story that combines the lives of multiple characters against the backdrop of the New Mexico landscape. Set in the aftermath of Abe Godwin's death, the story unfolds with a rich tapestry of family secrets, emotional turmoil, and unexpected revelations. Additionally, Scifres expertly integrates elements of mystery and suspense into the narrative. From Evie's quest for familial connection to Eloy's internal conflicts, each character is brought to life with vivid authenticity. Bitter Lakes is a gripping page-turner that will leave readers eagerly anticipating each new development.

My preferred character in the book is Eloy. While Eloy initially faced challenges in his relationships with his siblings, what resonates with me is his eventual commitment to making amends. Imperfection is inherent to human nature, yet what truly matters is one's willingness to rectify mistakes and strive for improvement. Ultimately, Eloy's willingness to acknowledge his mistakes and actively seek reconciliation with his family really moved me.

There are no drawbacks to the book. While I wish that their father had been more open with his children about important matters, I understand that every parent has their own reasons for their actions. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the story. Additionally, I appreciate how Evie fulfilled her role as a sister effectively throughout the narrative. Her character's portrayal added authenticity to the family dynamics depicted in the story.

The book is exceptionally well edited. I give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its highly relatable plot and its exploration of various themes. The portrayal of family dynamics, secrets, and reparation resonates deeply with readers, as these are universal aspects of the human experience. The book prompts thought and introspection, encouraging readers to reflect on their own lives and relationships. Overall, its relatable storyline and thought-provoking themes make it a standout read deserving of the highest rating. I recommend this book to fans of contemporary fiction and readers who enjoy books with suspenseful mysteries.
