Mae Codene, or Mary, as she has called herself since arriving in America, met Logan at a crucial time. Mary had come from Ireland after her father's death to look for her sister, who had traveled to America, leaving her when she was very young. She had used the money given to her by her father to get herself a ticket to America. Life had been a bumpy road when she met this man. Logan was, however, a criminal who not only loved the money he got from the activities he carried but also the thrill it gave him. Soon, Logan was on his way to Hermitsville to check on his business. He intended to take Mary along even when she wanted to stay in Manhattan to continue searching for her sister Colleen. However, when a man as cruel, selfish, and self-centered as Logan has lived long enough, he tends to amass a ton of enemies. However, he did not seem to mind, and the events of this end-of-season offer the thrill and excitement of the crime story by Don Heywood.

Gold as Ice is not only a masterpiece but also evidence that Don Heywood has carefully mastered the art of writing a suspenseful thriller based on crime and investigation. In crafting this story, Don has brought together characters of diverse backgrounds. The first chapters have developed the characters and the different settings they are in. This provided adequate information, ensuring adequate knowledge of the structure and personality of each character. These backgrounds were not mere introductions, but stories that presented the role the past played in the present.

The characters in this book make a clear presentation that diverse personalities exist within an individual. These characters may shape themselves to appear in whatever way they want to achieve whatever they need in the real world. An example of this character is Logan. This showed Don's ability to present these characters. While one of the characteristics of a good story is the characters, Don Heywood managed to write a book with an intricate presentation. Set in the 19th century, he has captured the lifestyle and activities that match this period and setting along the Hudson River.

Similarly, there was a gradual buildup of tension with every storyline. Heywood utilized aspects of the C/T/M/H genre with a well-articulated message addressing relevant societal issues while also providing entertainment. All these elements made me give the book a well-deserved rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book is fast-paced, capturing each minor detail until the end of the book. And to motivate everyone to read the book, no one will be ready for the ending. With so many pages, the editing is perfect, with only a single error noted.

I would recommend Gold as Ice by Don Heywood to all who love crime stories and the investigative nature of this kind of writing. I found no negative aspects in this book, and I doubt if anyone will. Gold as Ice is an intriguing title for a book, but more of all, it is a book that is well-developed and captures the essence of books, especially from a different, preserved, and rich century. There are clear timelines, and Heywood has a keen eye for detail. I would reverse time to read this book again.
