"Iris Woke Up" by Anne Athena Dura invites readers on a compelling journey through the intricate landscapes of dreams and the tumultuous emotions that accompany them. The story unfolds with Iris, unfortunately confined to a coma, evoking concern from her loved ones, particularly her girlfriend. Amidst her unconscious state, Iris delves into a series of lengthy and peculiar dreams, meticulously documented within the narrative. The question looms: will Iris awaken from her slumber?

One of the most commendable aspects of the book lies in its portrayal of dreams. Athena skillfully captures the essence of these enigmatic experiences, detailing them with vivid imagery and surreal occurrences that mirror the unpredictability of real dreams. The dreams are not only presented in intricate detail but also imbued with the inherent strangeness that characterizes such subconscious wanderings. This approach adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative, drawing readers deeper into Iris's subconscious world.

However, amidst the captivating dream sequences, there were moments of disorientation for me. A few of the transitions between scenes were abrupt and confusing, detracting from the overall flow of the narrative. For instance, the swift shifts in location and events, such as the transition from the apartment to the scene with her six-year-old self, and back to the apartment, left me momentarily bewildered. I know dreams can be ambiguous and unpredictable at times, but I felt an extra effort should have been made to guide the reader through for a more enjoyable read. Additionally, the use of different names for Iris further exacerbated this confusion, making it challenging to track her journey cohesively.

Despite these narrative hiccups, Athena excels in infusing the story with raw emotions that resonate with readers. The portrayal of characters experiencing a range of feelings, from worry and anxiety to hope and anticipation, adds depth and authenticity to the narrative.

"Iris Woke Up" is a testament to Athena's skill as a writer. The prose is polished and free from glaring errors, attesting to the book's professional editing. I did not encounter any objective errors while reading. Despite some narrative challenges, including disjointed scene transitions and character name confusion, the book shines in its ability to evoke genuine emotional responses from its audience. With its captivating premise and expertly crafted prose, "Iris Woke Up" earns a solid rating of 4 out of 5. The one-point deduction is due to the dislikes stated, which affected my flow while reading.

"Iris Woke Up" by Anne Athena Dura is recommended for readers who enjoy immersive narratives that explore the complexities of dreams and emotions. It will particularly appeal to those interested in psychological fiction and stories that delve into the subconscious mind.
