Maxine and Britta are not only cousins, but they are also best friends. After Britta’s body is discovered in Lake Shetek, Detective Josephine Kelly works to find out if Britta’s death was an accident or murder. Initially, Maxine is in denial that it could be murder; Britta was a well-liked woman who became famous for her workout DVDs and later became part of Lake Shetek’s social scene. After her death, Britta’s secrets begin to emerge. Detective Kelly finds that no one in Brita’s family is innocent.

To solve the case, Detective Kelly must look back at Maxine and Britta’s past. After her daughter went to college, Britta used her success to build a large house on the lake. Britta and Maxine would visit their grandma there as teenagers. After Britta moved to her new house on the lake, Maxine visited and reunited with her high school love Noah. Chapters detailing Maxine’s teenage years show her family struggles and Noah’s deep love for her and determination to keep her safe.

After another body is found in the lake, suspicions turn to married men in the area as the victim was known to have a married boyfriend in the small community. Could Maxine’s perfect husband be the killer? If so, what is his motive?

In Right Across the Bay, author Quinn Avery builds suspense and keeps the reader guessing until the very end. The story is a quick, captivating read with well-developed characters and thorough plot development. The chapters flashing back in time are easy to follow and the timeline is laid out well. The ending is satisfying, and I appreciated the epilogue which further ties things together.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. The book is a quick and easy read. It drew me in and kept me reading until I was finished. There are almost no errors in editing and the plot is suspenseful and unpredictable. The author handles mental illness and psychological issues respectfully and you can tell she did her research on the topic.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick whodunit that has lots of twists. Due to some adult content, I would only recommend this book to adults.

Great review! I am so intrigued by the plot and interested in finding out who the killer is (although I have much suspicions already 😉) I can't wait to read this.

The first paragraph makes me want to read the book right out the gate. The review makes it seem so mysterious. Best friends with family but no one in the family is as innocent as they seem? What is going on is what I'd like to know.
Cover of the book is phenomenal as well. Great job.
