Review of Disappearance
[Following is a volunteer review of "Disappearance" by Julien Ayotte.]
"Disappearance" kicks off with the mysterious assassination of Larry Morgan, a man under witness protection in Arizona. This murder marks the beginning of a complex and tangled web of investigations led by the sharp and determined private investigator, Harry Esten. As Harry digs deeper, the plot thickens with the murder of another protected witness, Fred Simpson, from Massachusetts. But why were these men targeted, and what connects their deaths?
The suspense escalates when Regina Roberts, another key figure linked to the case, narrowly escapes an assassination attempt. Who is orchestrating these attacks, and what is their end goal? Amidst these critical questions, two characters stand out in their influence and mysterious intentions: Oscar Pells and U.S. Marshal Cliff Mead. Oscar Pells, whose intricate involvement in the case gradually emerges, plays a crucial role that is pivotal to unraveling the mystery. Meanwhile, Cliff Mead, tasked with protecting these individuals, harbors motives that might not be as clear-cut as his job suggests.
Julien Ayotte's narrative prowess is on full display in "Disappearance," where he crafts a story rich with suspense, intrigue, and complexity. The writing is crisp and meticulous, marked by exceptional editing and grammatically flawless prose that make for an easy and engaging read. Each chapter deftly weaves into the next, maintaining a gripping pace that keeps the reader hooked through the intricate twists and turns of the plot.
The characters in "Disappearance" are thoroughly developed, with backstories and motivations that are slowly peeled back to reveal their true nature and how they fit into the larger narrative. The evolving dynamics between them add depth to the plot, enhancing the mystery and driving the story forward.
Ayotte’s handling of the climax and the subsequent unveiling of the mastermind behind the murders is both surprising and satisfying, answering the lingering questions with precision and leaving no thread untied. The resolution not only makes sense from a narrative perspective but also fits logically with the characters' motivations as they have been developed throughout the book.
