Opening Gambit marks the inaugural installment in the Morrow's Con series penned by Earl James. Following the expedition, Morrow, a scrappy underdog, navigates the gritty underbelly of Phoenix streets, delving into a world of revenge, cons, family, love, humanity, and crime. Divided into three parts, the narrative unfolds with a casual tone, inviting readers into Morrow's tumultuous world.

At 29 years old, Morrow, an ex-convict employed as a driver for Westcott, the second-ranking crime boss in Phoenix, finds himself thrust into a high-stakes gig by Rafe, a colleague within Westcott's criminal empire. Tasked with recovering a valuable painting believed to be in the possession of LeBlanc, Morrow faces a tight deadline and the uncompromising demands of Dr. Almeda, the painting's purported owner. Despite initial setbacks, including the withdrawal of Morrow's team members and threats from rival factions, Morrow persists in his mission, devising elaborate schemes and employing his quick wit to outmaneuver obstacles.

As Morrow's plans unfold, the narrative brims with tension and intrigue, punctuated by clever dialogue, and a succession of intricate cons. James's narrative prowess shines through in the seamless fusion of action and exposition, keeping readers thoroughly engaged from start to finish. Moreover, the meticulous editing and proofreading ensure a polished reading experience, devoid of distractions.

Notably, James excels in character development, crafting dynamic personalities such as Morrow, a loyal trickster with a penchant for championing the downtrodden, and Tara, LeBlanc's astute office manager. Their interactions add depth and nuance to the storyline, enhancing the overall richness of the narrative.

In summary, Opening Gambit stands as a masterful work of fiction, characterized by its logical coherence, engaging prose, and skillful blend of suspense and humor. With its flawless execution and compelling storytelling and nothing to criticize, this book earns a well-deserved rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to discerning readers of crime, thriller, and mystery genres and eagerly anticipate reading the next installment, ‘’Knight's Tour’’, in the Morrow's Con series.
