Review of Soul Seeker
[Following is a volunteer review of "Soul Seeker" by Kaylin McFarren.]
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is the first book in the Gehenna Series. It is an adult fantasy book told from the perspectives of a man and a demon. The book is divided into two parts; the first part centers around Benjamin Poe of the District One fire department in Lochton, Illinois. Poe had been arraigned for murdering his only son, Gabriel, but then he opted to speak to his lawyer, Pierce Beaudoin. Poe believes his son, Gabriel, started a fire at his workplace and gave false information regarding it, which then claimed the lives of three people. Poe also believes a soul-seeking demon manipulated his son into committing this heinous act; however, what circumstances forced him to take down his son? How does he become the most feared and hated man in Lochton?
The second phase of this book is centered around the demon Crighton, sent by his master, Lucifer, to capture souls for him, and this time, the soul of an angel, Ariel. However, after capturing her, they are captured by members of the sovereign sector, a faction involved in experimenting with supernatural creatures. A series of events now warrant tough choices, plus a budding romance between the captives. For more on what becomes of them, I suggest reading this book.
Soul Seeker by Kaylin McFarren is a supernatural thriller encompassing horror and romance and centered around the characters Ariel and Crighton. The book has some subplots, like the first part about Benjamin Poe, which further helps the reader understand the characters. I enjoyed the plot as it was richly woven and spell-binding; learning about hell and a first-hand description of a demon gripped me with a cold chill. I commend the character development of this book, as sufficient backstories were provided and adequate form was given to the characters involved. Crighton's journey from a cold, emotionless, and manipulative demon to a remorseful, slightly better character is a highlight that readers would not like to miss. The plot is extended yet simple, and I do not doubt the audience would understand it.
I have no dislikes but only words of commendation for the author and editors. The book's cover and description are bound to arouse interest and beckon the audience to pick it up, as they did for me. I encountered no errors while reading this, believing it was exceptionally well-edited. Based on the above positives, I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to audiences interested in mystery, thrillers, fantasy, horror, and supernatural-themed stories.
