Tanner Owen makes a bold debut with his thriller "The One Who Rules." Ostensibly investigating a global conspiracy theory, the novel throws the reader right into an explosive mystery. Protagonist Jim Jeffries is a writer who makes a startling discovery that points to some nefarious puppeteers pulling the strings of world leaders.

Jim meticulously compiles biographical data on hundreds of influential figures that reveals suspicious connections. No two have the same birthday, yet they span over 40 years in age. Even more strangely, their birthplaces line up in geographical sequence. Jim is convinced he has exposed a vast underground network with its fingers in all the world's pies. However, before he can publish his findings, a mysterious series of "accidents" leaves him with no evidence and his life in ruins. Owen wastes no time constructing an intricately layered puzzle. From the minute details in Jim's research to oddly coincidental events, readers are thrown headlong into perplexing clues. Jim emerges as a determined protagonist on the hunt for truth, even as forces work against him. His dogged investigation keeps the pages turning at a rapid clip.

While the conspiracy elements are certainly compelling, Owen's real strengths lie in his nuanced character portraits. Editor Melissa Du Pont brings a grounded presence, but their evolving relationship becomes one of the novel's most intriguing mysteries. Flashbacks flesh out both protagonists with empathy and care. The complexities of Jim and Du Pont anchor what could have been an exposition-heavy story.

The editing of the book is well done; there are no grammatical errors, which gives a seamless read. Of course, not every thread is tied up by the novel's end. Some questions are left hanging to possibly be explored in later installments. However, for a debut work, "The One Who Rules" juggles its various mysteries deftly while maintaining an enthralling pace. Conspiracy fans will find much to sink their teeth into, but Owen's true success lies in his multi-dimensional characterization. It marks the arrival of a talented new voice in thriller fiction. There are no negative points to mention.

In sum, Tanner Owen's "The One Who Rules" is a thought-provoking mystery that keeps pages turning. While the global conspiracy intrigue grips, Owen's real achievement is spinning compelling characters amidst the thriller elements. Readers will want to see where the author takes Jim's journey next. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
