Review of Praying Mantis

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Praying Mantis" by Tony Scott, MD.]
Like the majority of the population, Dr Faith Pernitelli has lived many lives since the year 2020. However, as a doctor, she was at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19, even contracting it herself. Once she has recovered, she is thrown into an investigation where she has to stop a physician from conducting any more heinous acts than he already has. Now, in this third installment, Faith must figure out what, or who, is mysteriously killing her patients and the people around her town.
For the majority of my time reading this book, I enjoyed the author’s writing greatly. Praying Mantis is the third book in the Faith Pernitelli, MD series, and while it was advertised as having the ability to be read as a standalone, I was worried that I would miss out on some pretty large pieces of context. However, the author, Tony Scott, MD, expertly bridged any gaps that might have been present from the first two books, and at no point did I find myself confused or feeling like I was missing any backstory.
That being said, I found the book to drag at times. There were details and dialogue included that, I believe, added nothing to the plot of the story nor to the development of any characters. It felt like filler information that was included to lengthen the book. While that did slightly hinder my enjoyment of the book, it was not enough to deter me from eagerly flipping through the pages to find out who the murderer was.
Despite my criticisms, I found myself thoroughly enjoying my time reading this book. The characters were well-written and complex, the plot was well-thought-out, and the end of the story was completely satisfying, leaving me with no follow-up questions. I feel it is important to mention that I did find a few errors. So, for the reasons mentioned above, I comfortably rate this book 4 out of 5.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy cosying up with an entertaining whodunit to pass the time. While the book includes topics such as murder and drug abuse, it includes only a few instances of profanity and very vague sexual themes, leading me to believe it is suitable for young adult readers. The mystery aspect will keep them hooked!
