Julian Mann's Madam Vice President is not an ordinary political suspense novel. Of course, it contains the expected suspense and cloak-and-dagger intrigue, but what makes it special is the deeper psychological aspect it brings: the fine line balancing ambition and one’s mysterious past.

However, at the heart of the narrative is Victoria Pierce, a former war hero turned politician with extraordinarily captivating paradoxical characters. Mann expertly brings about a female character of steel—an expert mastermind who has a singular focus on achieving her goals. Nevertheless, the glossy surface conceals a hidden past, camouflaged by furtive moves and eavesdropping. This remarkable characteristic draws the reader into a frenzy of intense interest to find out the hidden details that are haunting Victoria’s life. While she tries to get through the bumpy road of Washington, D.C., the novel obviously doesn’t avoid depicting the difficulties of a woman in a brutally competitive world ruled by men.

Yet in opposition to the rise of Victoria is the relentless search of Grace Brandon, a resolute journalist with an inquisitive nose for scandal. Fueled by a pretty high level of skepticism and thirst for the truth, Grace is going to do everything possible to unmask the truth behind Victoria's idyllic picture. This two-headed narrative creates a suspenseful twist. We root for both of them: Victoria, who wants to keep her past safe, and Grace, who is trying desperately to unmask the truth.

The editing was excellent. The great thing is that Mann knows how to write a plot that is not only believable but thrilling as well. The intricate politics seem real, and the world of high stakes is felt deeply. At the very point when you feel that you have understood the story’s path, the author surprises you—here is a plot twist or a hidden revelation. This non-stop dance heightens the suspense and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats, anticipating what revelation might come up next. Although Madam Vice President makes a great political thriller, it also indirectly uncovers some intricate issues like identity and what is lost when one chases their ambitions. Through her deception, Victoria initiates an introspective examination of the masks we don and the aspects of ourselves we keep concealed. The novel does not provide easy answers but instead is designed to make the readers ponder the intricacies of ambition and the costs of being at the helm.

I will rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Madam Vice President is more than just a fast-paced political thriller. It's a layered narrative that delves into the human cost of ambition and the complexities of navigating the corridors of power. While the book excels in suspense, some readers might prefer a political thriller that delves deeper into the intricacies of policy and political systems. If you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing until the very end while also prompting introspection about identity and ambition, then Madam Vice President deserves a prominent place on your bookshelf. Prepare to be surprised, entertained, and left pondering the choices we make in the pursuit of our goals.
