In Paul C. Bown's ‘Treacherous Pursuit,’ Dr. Steven Grant, an unwavering researcher from Oxford, finds himself embarking on a journey to Australia for his scientific endeavors. Intrigued by his uncle Neil's persistent invitations and the chance of acquiring samples from an isolated tribal enclave, Steven arranges a stopover in Pakistan. His research delves into the genetic implications of plastic compounds, exposing unsettling realities about ostensibly 'safe' plastics and unraveling connections between DNA alterations and commonplace food packaging materials. Despite being cautioned by peers, Steven perseveres, aware of the inevitable repercussions his revelations will unleash.

Taking personal charge of the sample collection, Steven is propelled by his determination to safeguard the authenticity of his work. Pakistani communities with minimal plastic exposure procure vital samples for DNA scrutiny. As Dr. Grant prepares to unveil his discoveries, he confronts a daunting reality: his revelations are poised to incite investigations, unsettle markets, and profoundly affect numerous lives. The narrative includes a romantic aspect, highlighting Steven's relationships with a few women, including Rachel in Oxford and Esther, whom he encounters in Pakistan. Esther's ties to Steven unveil disturbing secrets, and the plot unfolds with numerous relationship twists and revelations, implicating, among others, Steven's brother Reuben. Additionally, the narrative is enriched with intense action.

In essence, 'Treacherous Pursuit' offers an enjoyable experience, yet it comes with certain drawbacks. The plot, while engaging, occasionally veers into chaos as numerous events unfold. Both scenes and characters lack depth, leaving a yearning for more profound connections between them. A more comprehensive exploration of characters and detailed development could significantly elevate the book's impact. The writing maintains a crisp flow, with dialogue that feels authentic. Moreover, the book exhibits professional editing, devoid of any objective mistakes. While this debut novel offers a pleasant experience, I believe it could be enhanced with more fully developed characters and richer descriptions. Considering its strengths and weaknesses, I would wholeheartedly give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Fans of suspense novels with intricate plots and unexpected twists would likely enjoy 'Treacherous Pursuit.'
