Review of The Date Farm
The Date Farm by Jack Winnick is the fourth book in the Lara and Uri series. It has been easy for the Lara and Uri books to become my favorites because they are fast-paced action stories. Winnick continues to entertain and engage readers with his impressive story-telling style in this novel, and we find the action heating up on the first page.
The gross evil of the jihadists who entered a Los Angeles mall and unleashed canisters of noxious gas and began shooting unsuspecting victims felt surreal. A mixture of teens and adults were there to listen to local bands when they were ambushed. It was a suicide mission in which the attackers killed themselves. How frightening is an enemy who isn’t afraid to die? Lara and Uri were called to the scene because it looked like a terrorist attack. Who were the terrorists? What was their purpose? Who was their target?
Meanwhile, communication systems are disrupted, and only hard-wired landline phones are considered secure. While trying to solve the mall massacre, Lara and Uri must also examine the communications issue. In doing so, they meet some specialists who arouse their suspicions. Next, a group of foreigners take over two large bank buildings in New York City. The FBI leaders think the gold stored there is the target. What role does a mall shooting play in nationwide communications hacking? What does the takeover in New York have to do with the murder of the teenagers? Get this thrilling book and prepare to trundle through tunnels under a city, sail on a yacht across the ocean, and dodge bullets from Black Hawk helicopters.
I like the quick pace and the provocative plot twists. Just when I think I have it figured out, here comes a traitor whom I did not suspect. There goes my suspect who happens to be a good guy. Winnick is a master of plot control and character development, and this book genuinely showcases those skills. He toned down the blood and gore, which I appreciated, but the graphic violence is understood.
I find nothing at all to dislike about this book. Because it is exceptionally well-edited and well-written, I rate The Date Farm 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it for adults and mature teens. Dialogue between characters includes minimal profanity and a few racial slurs targeting Israeli people. The author makes no attempt to show preference for one religion over another nor to demean any personal belief system.
