"Morrow's Con: Opening Gambit" draws readers into a complex web of cons, crime, and intrigue from the very first page. Author Earl James masterfully sets the stage, introducing us to Morrow, a man escaping his past while trying to keep a low profile while working for a crime boss in Phoenix. James wastes no time plunging us into high-stakes situations that expose Morrow's quick thinking and nerves of steel.

Right from the start, we see that Morrow is no ordinary criminal—he is clever, thoughtful, and keenly observant of his surroundings. When thrust into dangerous situations alongside his boss, Arnie Westcott, Morrow handles himself with subtle finesse, exhibiting a clear head and the ability to strategize under intense pressure. James develops Morrow as a character who is far more complex than he appears; though working for a crime syndicate, Morrow seems keen to avoid attention and trouble. His interactions with coworkers like Rafe suggest Morrow has a hidden compassionate side as well.

The editing of the book is well done; there are no grammatical errors, which gives a seamless read. The crisp, fast-paced dialogue and chaotic action sequences will keep readers rapt as the plot spins out of control during a contested fight between crime factions. James injects plenty of twists, including a surprise bazooka attack that ratchets tensions higher. He establishes the criminal underworld of Phoenix in rich detail while dropping intriguing hints about Morrow's enigmatic past. Under the pulse-pounding narrative, James raises compelling questions about morality and motivations and how far someone might go simply to survive. There are no negative points to mention.

Overall, "Morrow's Con: Opening Gambit" is a tightly plotted, edge-of-your-seat thriller that wastes no time pulling readers into its gritty criminal milieu. Earl James demonstrates skill at crafting an intriguing protagonist in Morrow and spinning an escalating storyline with cinematic panache. Fans of crime novels like those by Elmore Leonard will appreciate James's talent for gritty dialogue and unpredictable scenarios. With its array of compelling characters and mysteries begging to be solved, this first book in the Morrow's Con series proves tremendously entertaining and leaves readers eager to follow Morrow's further cons and exploits. I would rate it 5 out of 5.
