I want to start by saying: what a ride! Veterans Day by J. J. Jorgens introduces us to Mary Jane. Starting out as a lawyer, Mary Jane discovered fairly quickly that wasn’t her calling. She then became a private investigator. You don’t have your typical woman here: she doesn’t care how she dresses, her ideal car is her Land Rover and she doesn’t have one though through this book that makes you think “wow, such a girl”. No, Mary Jane is tough as nails, even more, and she knows how to make people squirm.
Mary Jane’s old partner calls her late at night asking for help. From there, we follow a journey through the nets of corruption that is lurking in every corner of Washington D.C, more precisely on companies that are supposed to help veterans once they come back from war. Followed by her army of friends and family, Mary Jane uncovers some truths that very powerful people didn’t want seeing the day light and fights for the rights of the veterans. What is the limit someone is willing to go to protect themselves? Is one taken live enough? What is the limit of the fear someone can feel?
This book is written in a sober tone but full of humour. Every place Mary Jane visits is thoroughly described and some association with a historical event or person is made. Besides the obvious comic traces from Mary Jane’s personality, every important situation is treated accordingly. The veteran’s problems are not treated in a faster or smaller way. This issue, that is a real issue, is treated fairly. As it is corruption. We have a group of people fighting against the world to bring justice to this problem.
Every chapter on this book called to me, as a reader and a human being. Not only because the reality of the issues treated here, but also because we are seeing through the eyes of an incredible woman, who wants to fix something that shouldn’t be working poorly in the first place. How many of us think about that? About fixing the world? About doing something so our love ones have more human conditions to live? I would say every single one of us.
I laughed a lot. Mary Jane screaming “Geronimo!” while she was doing one of her crazy stunts was an ice breaker for the tension of what was happening. I also almost cried. Mary Jane feels. And you feel with her. You also feel with every other characters that show up in the book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The way the author wrote is amazing. Bringing historical culture to the middle of everything that was happening and make it seem natural? That’s talent: pure and raw. The fact that every sentence makes you feel also means this book is special. Writing a book about war veterans can’t be easy. But this book is fair and it is an eye opener for what happens with many veterans. I would like to congratulate the author for this amazing job and hope everyone that reads this feels compelled to get this book.
