Detective stories mesmerize me. I love Indiana Jones, Nancy Drew, The Lincoln Lawyer, Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes, My Sister’s Grave, and other detective stories. I chose Veterans Day by J.J. Jorgens to read and review because I like stories with a theme of women empowerment. The author introduced the protagonist through the protagonist's autobiography. This story is written with wits, decency, and professionalism. It will lead the readers into a deep reflection as they turn the pages.

Mary Jane Morris, also known as MJ is a lawyer but decided to leave her profession. She chose to become a private detective and she found it to be her passion. Her tangled detective life started when her mentor and ex-partner David McHale also known as Davy called for her help. Unfortunately, MJ failed to save him and she, later on, realized that Davy discovered a political conspiracy which caused his life. This conspiracy involves several political personalities and business tycoons. She realized that the veterans are the sacrificial lambs and there are millions of them who are suffering and dying without any medical help from the government.

I admire the author for deviating from the typical way of using blood and violence in detective stories. The descriptions of each character are presented in a perfect package. He gave justice to the character of MJ as a female private detective by highlighting her strengths as an empowered woman. The author made her a real human and not a fantastic superwoman. The readers will learn to love her as they follow her in her quest of salvaging whatever is left. My favorite character is the precarious twelve-year-old Jackson, the son of MJ’s friend because of his happy spirit. I also consider Larson, the egoistic but principled detective an amazing character. He played a great role in trampling the big personalities behind the political issues.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of the errors like “had” instead of “hard”, “I” instead of “it”, and some missing words. I found myself guessing the missing words. Some parts of the narration are flat and dragging. There are instances when the narrations are trivial and they do not actually help in the development of the story. An example to illustrate this concern is Davy’s cat. I was trying to figure out what will happen to the cat, but its life story ended with the scene when MJ saw it with a rat.

This story is perfect for those who love mystery. It is also perfect for those who want to ponder while reading. I warn those who love action-packed stories because this story does not satisfy their taste. This story is focused more on the detective’s insights and philosophies and not a hard-core detective thriller.

MJ seems to be our modern day Nancy Drew! I can't wait to meet her.

Thanks, kabayan, for a thoughtful review! I think the topic hits close to home.

Thanks, Kabayan. When I was reading the book, I found myself recalling all the political issues that we have gone through and the ones that we are experiencing at the moment.

What I wouldn't give for a good detective story. Great review, Donnavila

Yup. You will surely like the empowered protagonist with her wits.

It sounds interesting and intriguing, with a good plot and strong characters, but I think that it doesn't have enough action for me! Thank you for the review.

Yeah. It lacks action for a detective story. It is more of a narrative about the protagonist's thoughts and experiences in the past. It is still a good read though.

We seem to love the same types of books :) Great review of a book that could have been so much more if it weren't for the spelling mistakes.
