Review of Secretsath the Surface
Secretsath the Surface by Malcolm Harkins is a mystery novel set in a small town filled with many secrets. The story follows various characters, including a young journalist named Amelia Reed, who is determined to uncover the town’s secrets, and Detective Jameson, who is on the trail of an elusive figure known as “The Shadow.”
The book’s plot is quite vague and fails to deliver a coherent and engaging story. Throughout the book, the phrasing is repetitive, and it uses cliché phrases like “danger lurks around every corner” multiple times, which negatively affected my reading experience. The characters’ introductions feel rushed, lacking any backstories or physical descriptions, which made it impossible for me to connect with them.
Even though the book mentions the town’s secrets, it unfortunately provides no significant clues about what these secrets might be, which is quite frustrating. Despite reading it multiple times, I still had trouble understanding the plot and the importance of the seemingly random characters that popped up and then disappeared.
The author’s choice to refer to the characters in the book as “the characters” rather than by their names further disconnected me from the story. In addition, the story ended without any major revelations, which was unsatisfying.
I did not notice any grammatical or typographical errors, so the editing is flawless. However, each chapter’s title was repeated on the page before it began, which may have been an artistic decision.
I was quite disappointed with the overall experience. I can’t find anything positive to say about the book. It’s not a book I would recommend, as it feels like it was written by an AI chatbot instead of a human being.
I rate the book 1 out of 5 stars for the reasons listed above, which boil down to the book’s lack of clarity and cohesiveness.
For the book to be more enjoyable, the author should provide details about the characters’ appearances, backgrounds, and personalities. Also, the author needs to develop the plot logically and avoid using cliché phrases. Lastly, the book should have a satisfying resolution.
