L. Andrew Cooper's horror-fantasy serial The Middle Reaches delves into a sinister and enigmatic universe that exists outside of our own. The Middle Reaches is a bridge connecting two worlds that is home to bizarre threats and deformed creatures. The story follows many characters as they become lured to this bridge. Each of the fifteen episode cycles that make up the serial has a distinct topic and storyline.
The narrative begins with Nick dreaming of being in a strange cave and coming across a strange tentacled creature that licks and tears his flesh, causing both pain and pleasure at the same time. When Nick wakes up, his pal Sheldon Vere's unexplained disappearance coincides with sexually stimulating nightmares that recur every ten years. Reunited with his high school pals after years apart, they agree to meet at Nick's house. At the meeting, Sheldon reveals that the five of them had all had the same dreams about a location called "The Middle Reaches," which is home to strange, unholy gods and creatures.
You're left wanting to know what will happen next as the plot becomes more and more suspenseful as the chapters go by. The section where the friends decide to revisit the Middle Reaches was quite interesting to read. An exciting setting is created by the constantly shifting surroundings and strange encounters. The characters manage to keep things interesting in spite of the pandemonium, notably Ambrose, whose clever snark kept me laughing the entire time. I am eager to read more of this narrative, as I have only read the first eight chapters so far. Luckily, Kindle Vella is offering free tokens that can be used to unlock the first few chapters.
I should point out one drawback, though, which is that even after reading the book halfway through, I still found a lot of the tale to be ambiguous. At first, I didn't really get a lot of Sheldon's disappearance. The characters also lacked a great level of teamwork, which isn't a bad thing to say, but if they had demonstrated a stronger aptitude for cooperating, they may have easily surmounted some significant challenges.
Thus far, I have thoroughly liked perusing 'The Middle Reaches (Episodes 1-8)' and would definitely like to explore more. The first eight episodes did not contain any grammatical errors, thus I would assume that this book has been professionally edited. Additionally, I couldn't think of anything bad about this book. I want to give this book five stars since the author has a talent for telling a strange yet captivating story. However, those who are sensitive should avoid this book since it contains graphic fatalities, terrible situations, sexually explicit language, and profanity. Fans of psychological thrillers, atmospheric horror, mysteries, and highly compelling stories should not miss this book.
